Previous part in this series: Previous part in this series: Goal setting and visualization pt. 1
I got a lot of great feedback on my first post on visualization and the collage technique. Thank you for that ! Some of you came in contact with this technique months and years ago but failed to realize the power in it, just like me when my daughter Muriel made her christmas list. I am happy that I was able to remind you of the power that is in these posters and that a lot of you are now motivated to create their own ones. That’s awesome. It’s all about little voice management.
Let me share some tips that were useful for me:
1. When I learned about the power of this collage technique, I was immediately very excited, however it took me another three months to create my first one. Why that ? At first, my little voice said to me:”What a trash. You won’t believe that childish stuff, will you ?” So I had a lot of other stuff to do. Secondly, when I found myself in one of these seminar sessions with a lot of other couples, being told to create a collage now, I felt physical pain to cut my favourite magazines. Little voice said:”I can’t do that.” How ridiculous. OK, I managed to overcome this feeling and created my first collage – once started, it was an awesome, freeing feeling that was a mental cleanse in itself.
2. As visualization is part of the goalsetting process, chances are that fear of success, self-doubt etc. work at you and you tend to postpone it. My little voice knew very well that this is a serious, highly effective method, it simply works – so it tried hard to bother me with fear and self-doubt, especially when we started with it. No matter what, even if you let go a goal later, get started and just do it. The ideas will come once you cut your first pictures, ads etc…and feelings of gravity will vanish.
3. Don’t try to be perfect, it’s only for you and nobody else needs to see them. Post it on a wall that is easily visible so that you watch them often and subconsciously. Don’t let them disappear in a drawer ! Without watching them, enjoying them, feeling grateful about having reached your goals, feeling worth of reaching your goals, they won’t work.
4. As mentioned, you must embrace your collages, nobody else. On the other hand, I used to be afraid of placing them on prominent places in our house where people may stop by and watch them. That was not because of the poor quality of the collage itself, but because of my fear of appearing greedy and what other folks might think about me. Remember this: What other people think about you is none of your business. If you are afraid of being criticized by friends and family because of your collages, then overcome this fear or don’t even try to reach your goals. If this fear stops you already, you’re going to fail anyway. It’s that simple.
5. Change your collages if necessary. They are not only part of the goalsetting process, but also of the goal finding process. Chances are you make a collage and after several weeks of watching it you realize: “Nice collage, but that isn’t my goal.” That’s great. In this case, the collage helped you not to head into the wrong direction, you can make corrections before having invested too much time and energy in it. If you allow it, your subconscious mind will “tell” you if these goals make sense for you or not. If your excitement even rises over time, that’s a very good sign. Of course: Don’t take it too easy, especially if you used to be a quitter. The sentence “I don’t need that.” mustn’t be an excuse for quitting or failing ! Period.
To be continued: Part 3 of Goal Setting – Visualization.
Visualization is also an important part of auto-suggestion.

That’s it. Sometimes it’s not the easiest thing to do, but at the end of the day you can either build your dream or somebody else’s. Jeff Olsen even stretches this point: You build either your dream or your nightmare.

Very good article Oliver. I have always known the power of making dream boards and life boards. I was taught this stuff in grade school and I think most of us were. Putting that aside and coming back to it can be comforting when, lets say months down the road it seems we get off track from all the excitement of discovery three months ago. I think that is why I like to write and express myself. i sometimes go back and read one of my articles and wonder who was that masked man. But it was from me and my heart at the time. I think that most of us have a hard time exposing ourselves to others. We do not want anyone to criticize or judge us. And if we make up something silly that you did in grade school you may not do it because of the fear of exposing something you don’t want anyone else to see. Just a thought of why I don’t even do it.
I am wondering if our family should do one together. Sometimes it is easier to meet someone else’s goals than my own…lol. Just that thing about helping someone other than myself.
Ok…I am over it…what the heck do I have to hide? My laziness?
Have a wonderful day,
Scott

Hi Scott,
thanks for your comment. Wow, you learned that in grade school, well i didn’t
Writing post, doing video and expressing myself is some type of therapy to me, I get feedback and can come back later to see what I wrote. The post you were commenting on, was originally published by me 6 months ago. I didn’t change much, if anything.
It was me and came from my heart and still rings true.
Everybody has their little secrets to hide from the public, that’s neither good nor bad, it’s just like it is as long it’s not in your way to own your life.
Thanks for opening up and adding value to my post.
Thanks for sharing.
Take care
Oliver

Hi Oliver,
How are you? I really loved this post, and it made me thinking.
Can it be that most people are afraid to dream? Can it be that most people let circumstances or their problems push them so low, that dreaming or having goals sounds to stupid or to good to be true? On the other hand if you stop dreaming you stop living, Don’t you?
Have a great weekend,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
I don’t know if people are afraid to dream…however, most people don’t know that it’s OK to dream, that they’re supposed to dream even. For me dreaming and pursuing my dreams is definitely an important of being and feeling alive.
Doing great btw…
Thanks for stopping by.
Cheers
Oliver
