Goalsetting and visualization – what does that mean ?

Now that you know what you want to do with your time and money and you’ve got your personal why, it’s important to pull your subconscious mind on your side. I do it through visualization because our subconscious mind only understands the language of feelings, thoughts and pictures.

So we have to “talk” to our subconscious mind in this language. One of the techniques my wife and I use are collages. That’s a very simple yet effective technique I learned from my oldest daughter when she was 6 years old. She couldn’t read and write then and so she cut ads from some toy catalogues and kid’s magazines and sticked them on a large sheet of paper – born was her birthday and christmas list. I was amazed.

Unfortunately, I didn’t realize the true power in these collages only when my wife and I attended a seminar a few months later that cost us nearly 5.000 €. Sometimes it’s cheaper and better to learn from our children !

Since then, we’ve got several collages. I want to give you some impressions.

1. A long-term vision collage with our ideal lifestyle (future) –> allows a lot of flexibility

My vision collage with my ideal lifestyle

2. Mid-term goal collages (future) –> allows certain flexibility

Mid-term goal collage 1

Mid-term goal collage 2

3. Goal collage (1 year) –> the least flexibility

This goal must be nailed. Nailed. Nailed. It’s a true goal with the least amount of flexibility. The more ambitious you are, the more flexibility you may want to allow to yourself. For me, goal setting sometimes is also a matter of “letting go”.

3. Occasional motivational collages (future)

In autumn 2007, I was way behind the qualification for my company’s (no MLM then) most important incentive:The “Champions League”. It was an all-expense paid trip to Cuba. So I made a small collage about Cuba. Then, the miracle happened: In the last three months of this year, I qualified easily for the Champions League incentive and I won the Cuba trip, and so did I in upcoming years with collages about Kuala Lumpur and South Africa. And either of them worked.

4. Gratitude collages (past)

Each year, I make a folder with the nicest photos, tickets, menus, snapshots, bills and documents that fulfill me with gratitude. Not only when I’m down, I watch this folder and my mood rises immediately because I’m fulfilled with gratitude and joy.

There’s no doubt about it that I achieved this because it’s in the past ! It’s proven. That’s the beauty of gratitude, it’s proven. And if you are grateful about your achievements in the past, gratitude will attract more of it into your life, in abundance. So this collage is probably one of the most important ones. Note: This works with ingratitude too.

There are no limits, no strict rules, stretch your imagination, you’re not in school. You are the boss of your life.

For instance, I made a film about our Guernsey trip last year with music that addresses my emotions and vibrations and I use it as gratitude collage as well as mid-term-goal collage. I watch it at least once per week and the more I watch it, the more I get the feeling: I can do it. I can make it. I will make it. I HAVE made it. No feeling of saturation.

And that’s important: To get the feeling of gratitude of already having achieved your goals when you watch your collages. You need to watch them to feed your subconscious mind with positive pictures and feelings. You may also notice after a while watching your collages that some of the goals or pictures don’t attract you any more.

And that’s great because it saved you a lot of time and energy because you didn’t chase after goals that don’t fulfill you. Then make a new one. It’s that simple. By the way, you may want to start reading my series about the awesome power of gratitude.

In upcoming posts, we’re going to discuss further techniques of visualization. Please read go ahead to part 2 of Goalsetting – Visualization.

Stretch your imagination !

Hey I just found your blog and I think you have a great idea! I have been thinking about visualization a lot and how having a good vision of what you want is necessary for success. I never thought about collages as an aid to help with the visualization process though. Thanks for the great info! I’m going to make a collage folder! :)

I did not realize this but my girlfriend actually has been using this collage idea with her students at school. She had everyone in her classroom make a collage on what is inspiring to them or what their goals are and then they posted each of their collages on the classroom wall. She said it was a great experience for the class as a whole and that the students really enjoyed the activity.

    Hey Oliver
Great idea. So far I have practiced visualization but I realize through your post that
having a physical visual representation of what you want in your life serves as a reminder to practice visualization which is especially handy in the midst of a busy day but also makes it easier since it takes very little effort. Even when you are not visualising, the presence of a poster tells the universe what you want 24/7.
Time to take action on this. Warm Regards, Paul

    Hi Paul,

thanks for your comment. A physical reminder that’s always present is very helpful, that’s right. There are plenty of possibilities today, thanks to the internet for example.

Well, a physical contract can also serve as proof, some type of contract: You really set the goals and nobody else. Our mind tends to forget what we strived for. And it can hurt if you have to admit that you didn’t reach a goals and remove collages that didn’t come rue, for whatever reason.

    Take care

  3. Hey Oliver… vi gates?
I really like collages, a long-term vision collage, a midterm collage, goal collage, motivational collages and gratitude collages. I like the term collages a lot better than a vision board, same stuff but collages sound better.

Telling someone, I’m going to build a collage, makes it mysterious. Great post Oliver. :)

Thanks for your comment. Well, I didn’t know another word than “collage”, I learned later about the term “vision board”. Anyway, they’re very powerful.

Your feedback means a lot to me because I value your opinion a lot due to your inspiring videos about the law of attraction.

    Hi Oliver
I love your post! I have heard a lot about and dabbled with vision boards in the past but I have never heard anyone speak of gratitude collages before. To celebrate and give thanks to what has come into your life – what a delicious concept. I love it! Now I know what to do with all those ticket stubs I’ve been hoarding!
    Thanks,
    Caroline.

thanks for your beautiful comment. I’m glad that I was able to inspire you.

The beauty of a gratitude collage is that there can be no doubt about the achievements: They are there, in the past, with a lot evidence – other than collages that affect the future. That’s why they are the foundation of the future.

    Hi Oliver
I have had vision boards for years but never separated them out to long and medium term etc like you have and I love your idea. I also have a gratitude journal but not the collage. and I can see that would be much more powerful. When we were shifting house a couple of weeks ago we started going through old photos. We have many pictures of wonderful holidays we have had in the past. So Oliver you have inspired me to do my gratitude collage.
I know the importance of gratitude so can see this will help. It always gives me a sense of abundance to see some of the wonderful times we have experienced.
As always I enjoyed your post immensely

    Hi Sue,

thanks for your comment. I am glad you enjoyed my post so much. The beauty about gratitude collages is that they affect the past, that means there’s evidence that we accomplished something – other than future oriented collages. Future needs to be backed up by faith whereas the past is filled with gratitude. Of course, gratitude for the past will attract things to be grateful for in the future.

Thanks for your comment. You are always adding value to my posts.

  6. Hi Oliver,

I have used dream boards or pictures but have never thought of putting together what you have done. To be honest when you think about it, it makes sence to put everything out in a managable format. We can run before we can walk. Thanks for sharing.

Hey good job on that one Oliver! Too many people think it is stupid to do that kind of collage, they are shy about that. I learned once in my life that we should do one collage for every goal that we want to accomplish. If you don’t want to put it anywhere where people can see it, just put it in your closet :) You’ll be the only one seeing it every morning ;)

    Thanks again Oliver!

  11. So many on my team tell me that they want to purchase for example a home. We know that is not good enough. Go onto the Internet, check your local homes for sale and find the home you want. Understand how many bedrooms, baths, type of family room.

Take a picture of that home and keep it in front of you, you have your why. You may not buy that particular home but you have the visual you need to understand why your not going to allow distractions to come between you and your why

    Howdy Oliver,
    Well done (again)..
Thought I would share a bit about the subconscious. There was a book I read in the 1980′s that I think was called Learn While You Sleep. It was the technique of telling your mind what to work on while you slept. It would put your subconscious to work on solving a problem while you slept and when you woke, the solution would be in your hands. I got something out of it, but found that I got more out of this concept in a different way. It had to do with my prowess on the golf green. Before, in standing over a putt, I never saw it going in. After doing some mental preparation, I could stand over most putts visualizing them falling in. Mind control? I don’t know, but you can train your mind to some extent.

    Hello again Oliver,

I have been digesting your outstanding posts. I had to comment on this one.

I love to golf. Visualization for life’s goals is not dissimilar to visualization in golf (and most likely other sports). To have a great round of golf, I have to “see” my shot and outcome before I take my swings. It’s also very important on the finesse shots around the green and putting. I believe this holds true in getting to where you want to go in life, also.

The subconscious is a wonderful thing. Like you say, it loves images, and I love giving it what it wants.

  15. I can honestly say that I have never done one of these – fantastic idea. All of my goals, short, mid, and long – are stuck in my head. Always subject to changes and improvements.

If you can dream it – you can do it! Make it happen! Never let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve your goals!

“If your friends aren’t laughing – your goals aren’t big enough…”

I’m all fired up now, Oliver ;)
