Hello everybody, as a mentor with Mentoring for Free, I’m talking to a lot of people about their businesses – successful marketers and others that are struggling. Nearly all of those that are struggling have one thing in common: They love their product. And they tell you:”I love it.” Some even:”I owe my life to them.” But they aren’t making a dime.
Sometimes it’s fancy technical stuff nobody needs and hardly anybody wants to buy. Sometimes they are over-priced, so hardly anybody wants them either. Other companies bypass their marketers and do retailing. Or you can buy these products on the internet for half the price. Or you need let’s say 1.000 or even more people in your team to make a reference amount of 5.000 $ a month because of a poor compensation plan. Or people realize in binaries that they’re only paid on the weak leg and so they lose volume. Or they have a hard time balancing their legs. The list of possible flaws in this field of stealing people’s bonuses is nearly endless.
So you’ve got the situation: Hard-working person with a reasonable team of both distributors and customers, and they’re not making an adequate amount of money. They know that they can’t go on like that. They learn about alternatives that could make them way more money with the same amount of effort (or less)…but: “I love my product.”Or they’re blaming the alternative:”This is a me-too product.”
They are intertwined with their product. They know that they’re in a bad opportunity, but they can’t let go of it because they’re intertwined with the it. What is the reason for that behaviour ? Not wanting to admit a mistake ? Afraid of justifying the new decision to the team ? Overdone loyalty ? I don’t know. Perhaps you’ve got an idea.
For these folks, the love of the product is the root of all failure. I would rather promote a “me-too”-product with a huge market than blazing a trail for a new one with uncertain prospects. MLM Network Marketing is about promoting what people what not what I want. It’s certainly not about promoting someting that only serves my ego because I love it but I can’t market it, neither to clients nor to distributors.
It reminds me of Robert Kiyosaki’s comparison of a small hamburger stand and Mc Donald’s. The owner of the small hamburger stand is proud of his hamburgers because they’re the best in town. And certainly, you and me can make a better hamburger than Mc Donald’s in our home kitchen. But Mc Donald’s are the best when it comes to selling billions of average hamburgers to tons of people all over the world.
What is the difference ? The small hamburger stand owner is proud of “his” product and therefore prisoner of his own product. He will have a hard time building a system that will sell his hamburgers, if he ever wants to build a system. While he is proud of his hamburgers, Mc Donald’s are proud of their outstanding hamburger distribution system. Because he’s so proud of his hamburgers, he’s doomed to stay small and will have to keep on making his quality hamburgers, in the worst case personally. It’s the classical self-employed mentality.
What can we learn from this example for our MLM Network Marketing business ? Business building is system building. You want to build a system of clients and distributors that pays you and your children’s children without ever having to work again. You want to build relationships with people so we can say, your product is people. MLM Network Marketing is a relationship business.
If you “love” your product and want to sell it, you’re in a sales business and you need to recruit people. And people who adore their products are probably looking at a business merely with the eyes of a client and not with the eyes of business builder. If the products are great, you can buy them and but you are not forced to build a business around them. You can buy these products and build your MLM Network Marketing business with another one that people want.
Don’t get me wrong: I love my products too. They’re having an impact on my life and those of my clients and distributors, and they’re affordable. People want them and there’s already a huge market for them. So we’re in the right market momentum.
So I came to realise that an outstanding product is only one of 5 pillars that need to be in place to be a great business opportunity. An outstanding product and only one of the other 4 pillars not being in place, and you’re building on sand. After having found a product that people want, I immediately fell in love with this product. And not vice versa.
Can you see the difference ?

I agree that one major reason for failure in business is not looking at what the market wants or needs. True of MLM & regular business models. I saw this frequently in my regular business before my MLM days.
Belief in our product is essential but how many potential clients will believe in it? We have to find a product to which the answer is “a lot”

my man is always comming up with something powerful like this post. It´s necessary to have a fine product but our priority should always be to give value ini the first place.

I almost laughed when I read the title of this post. I am with a company where so many people love the product. I think it happens a bit in wellness where people get a great result for their health and then get carried away. For quite a long time some people would not even talk about the business.
Others do not want to make money – just help people
I too think the products are great but I also love the business model . And I love the game of business.

thanks for your comment. It wouldn’t work with a bad product either, that’s obvious. We should never forget that it is a business after all, and for a successful business, the product is probably the least important thing, at least one of the least important things.
