How to stop negative self-talk: We all know that we should practice positive thinking and programme ourselves for success.

Let’s say you’re following exactly Napoleon Hill’s advice outlined in his book “Think and grow rich” on how to transmute your desire for riches into its financial equivalent, the six practical steps. Everything is perfect, you read your plan twice a day in order to convince yourself that you will have the desired object, in this case money.

Everything’s perfect ? Well, chances are you feel great and you’re doing great. And all of a sudden, hours or days later, doubt creeps in. “What if it doesn’t work ?” “That’s not realistic…”, “What if I fail…”, “I know I am a failure…”

Who knows that ? I do.

There are two bad things to do in this situation: Firstly, giving way to doubt and negative self-talk and secondly, beating yourself up for being guilty of doubt and negative self-talk. The latter is the safest way to accelerate the spirale downwards.

So what you can do against negative self-talk ? I can only tell what works for me and want to illustrate that with a little video I found on YouTube:

I practice that: As soon as I realize that I’m talking and thinking myself into failure or that other people’s voices in my mind try to do so, I say, sometimes scream to myself:”Stop ! We certainly don’t go there. Stop it !” May sound weird, but it works. By the way, isn’t the negative self-talk more weird than saying “Stop it !” to yourself when you are destroying your own picture of your success ?

  2. Oliver,
That was a great way to illustrate a radically important concept! The Law of Attraction states that we attract that with which we are in vibrational resonance, and every thought we think has it’s own vibrational pattern–so it really is so important to watch our thoughts and become aware of what we are creating and attracting with them. I love your simple, yet powerful method of just INTERRUPTING the thought and saying stop it. I’d even take it one step further and once you stop it– put the opposite thought in motion.
Thanks for sharing. I’m going to try it today :)

  3. It is a great video Oliver. Though it seems very simple, it is so true and a great way to cut through our own negative thoughts. Often we try too hard to psychoanalyse ourselves when this is simpler and more effective.

    Hi Charlie,
thanks for your comment. Overdone analysis only leads to more analysis, more self-doubt and fear. It’s important to stop the vicious circle.

Maybe I am just an ageing hippy, but when I find myself having ANY type of doubt or negative thought I say (out loud if possible) “I am as one with the Universe, and it channels it’s abundance through me”. Normally have to repeat a few times, but it certainly works to chase away the negative thoughts and put me back on track.

    Hi Ruby,
isn’t that awesome being a hippy ? And if it works for you, even better. I love this affirmation. And it’s great that you are willing to repeat it. I think that is a key: Repetition. We learn through repitition and a lot of life essential things we do over and again, like eating and sleeping. And we don’t say:” Oh, I only ate this morning, why am I hungry again at lunchtime ? That’s too much of a hassle, I won’t eat now even if I’m hungry.” The same holds true with personal development and resurrection of faith: If self-confidence and faith vanish, we have to re-establish it, like eating. Thanks for the great comment !

We´ve to get rid of negative self talk, the way we do it, is to replace that garbage with positive thoughts.

    Great post-video.

Oliver I love the video and what a great illustration. I think many of us (well me anyway) have over complicated our negative self talk. There are several techniques I have heard of but I love that one. Stop it!
I agree negative self talk is way more weird than saying Stop it.
Thanks for another great post Oliver.

    Hi Sue,

I know plenty of methods too – they all have one flaw in common: We dive to deep into the negativity.

The “Stop it !” method has the undeniable advantage that it reminds us that we need to stop whining and start thinking again.

“My mom used to call me fat.” –> “We certainly don’t go there. Simply stop it. ”

    How awesome is that ?

    Thanks for your comment.
