What is your belief system about money ?

You may know that one of my favourite subjects to write about is financial intelligence in MLM Network Marketing. Financial intelligence is part of the overall idea of emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence means being able to control one’s emotions so that the emotions don’t take over our thinking and subsequently our behaviour and reactions in any given situation related to money.

It’s not about suppressing emotions but about controlling them. That’s a huge difference.

Consequently, financial intelligence means the ability of controlling our emotions with regard to money, be it excess of money or lack thereof.

The concept of delayed gratification is an essential pillar of financial intelligence.

I remember very well times when I lacked money and was completely desperate, times when I had more than enough money and was wasting it – even times when I had more than enough money and was afraid of losing it and not making enough money in the future.

Good luck, I learned (and am still learning) emotional control with regard to money.

MLM is a battlefield of financial intelligence (sorry, I need to say that)

So all the emotions around the subject of money are driven by fear and greed – and our financial belief system.

These emotions have nothing got to do if you are rich or poor. There are poor greedy people and rich greedy people. There are poor humble people and rich humble people.

Basically, the adequate belief system around the subject of money facilitates emotional control or makes it more difficult if it is inadequate.

So if you are struggling with money (or with the subject of money), it’s crucial for you to become aware of your financial belief system.

So I want to challenge you today with the following questions:

1. What are your beliefs about money regardless if they’re positive or negative ?

2. How do you handle them ?

3. Which beliefs serve, which ones block you ?

4. How could you turn around the negative beliefs about money so that they serve you ?

Feel free to answer through the channel that’s the most approbriate for you and we’re going to discuss the answers and trying to add some points of view to your current belief system.

As far as I’m concerned, I know plenty of them, especially beliefs that rather prevented me (past tense, good luck) from getting rich.

I’m going to share them too, of course. Same rules for everybody.

Please refer to “Beliefs About Money – Oliver Tausend’s experiences”.

I’m looking forward to your active participation in this challenge !

I asked a lot of questions today, so what is your opinion ?

I always love your feedback, so please leave me a comment down below with questions, thoughts, or feedback. And (yes, here’s my call to action) please share this post with your Twitter and Facebook friends by clicking on the share buttons below.

I appreciate you telling others.

    Hi Oliver,
Great topic. Our belief on money has a lot to do with our education. We were educated on a belief of scaricty and until we reeducate ourselves and start seeing money from the aspect of abundance, our belief and emotions on financial education would not change from the scaricty so greed would be part of our thinking.

    Hello Oliver
This is a great topic! I have just begun to work on my own attitude to MONEY -
I believe that my attitude towards money was influenced by a particular family member in a negative way – jealousy of people with more than we had etc. At the ripe old age of 61 I have become aware that I have been always “saving” when I didn’t need to, constantly needing to know what things cost and generally coming from a place of “scarcity”. I have turned my thinking around and now regard money as currency and that there is an infinite supply of money, so now I think of investing rather than spending. More work to do on this one!!! Thank you for the questions

  4. It is funny that you brought this up, many people beleive that money will make them happy or happier. I have to say that while having extra money is nice, it cannot replace many things. I worked almost 15 years in retail management and clocked 70+ hours a week, yes the salary was nice but I had no extra time. I had no time to spend with the wife, with friends and family, it was actually somewhat depressing. I currently now work from home and much happier, less stress and get to do what I want when I want.

Money cannot buy you happiness, doing what you want when you want brings you happines.

  6. Great post, Oliver! I think that the main thing that we have to do is see money as a tool, rather than the end-all-be-all of our existence. I have seen what happens when money becomes everything to people, and I think that the best way to counteract that is to have a spirit of generosity every step of the way.

  7. Money, money, money… Being with or without is a constant challenge!

My belief on that is very simple: I believe that God gives me everything I have, whether little or much, and I try to treat it as such. Give and you shall receive – it’s been proven in my life again and again:).

Fear and greed are great motivators indeed; however, I contend that neither one of those will improve our lives one little bit.

Sorry to go so philosophical on you, Oliver, but the topic itself is not exactly cut and dry:).

I consider money as a tool of personal deveopment: How can I learn to overcome my “obsession” about money if I never had any ? I don’t know exactly what God has in mind with the subject of money, but I consider it possible that we all can make a lot of money, keep it, spend it, invest it etc. and that we need to work on ourselves to overcome greed, fear and obsession.

Absolutely good point Oliver. Jesus told the story of the woman who gave her last penny (my translation of the currency) who was to be admired more than the showy arrogance of the person who was known to give a lot but after all had plenty left over. I happen to have this very topic on my mind as I just heard a new “guru” pontificate on the importance of being rich. In his view it is the rich who support charities. A poor person can’t do anything. Unfortunately, that is far from the truth. Most often the per centage of giving by lower middle class earners far exceeds the per centage of giving by wealthy earners. Obviously, there are notable exceptions, but anecdotal information does not change the facts.

    Oliver Reply:

    Hi Richard,
thanks for your comment and sharing this great story. Christian sources and the bible are amazing. For a lot of reasons of course – but with regard to this subject because the advocates of being poor find their proves and the advocates of being rich find their proves either. Then there’s the famous Parabel of the Talents which leaves the judgement (or expressed more neutrally: the decision) completely to the reader. I had to think a lot about that and I concluded that we all have the right to decide. It’s not noble to be poor, and it isn’t noble to be rich. God’s love is unconditioned anyway. I would never say that a poor person can’t do anything.

Time is more important than money, so a poor person could donate his or her time for example. On the other hand, if people keep themselves in the Rat Race of changing their time against money, chances are they have nothing left to donate. As far as I’m concerned, I would rather donate a lot and keep a lot, honestly, for some practical reasons ;-) . At the end of the day, I think it has nothing got to do with absolute $ or € amount, but with the attitude. You can donate a certain amount of money either with the attitude of arrogance or with the attitude of gratitude.

I know a couple of people who donate a lot of their spare time to our primary school and to our kindergarten. But they work with “corporate elbows” even as volunteers, if you know what I mean. They’re intriguing, for example so it’s hard to find folks outside the “hard core circle” to help at events etc.

In the moment of writing I realize that this is really a deep deep subject !

    Have a blessed day

Our “money beliefs” certainly DO play a role in how we succeed or fail in our handling of the money in our lives, not to mention it influences whether we have money abundance or not.

Society, our parents, our teachers are quick to say “Money doesn’t grow on trees”, “Money is the root of all evil” & “Do you think I’m made of money” all of which come from a point of scarcity.

By the time we are in the market to start earning our own money, our beliefs are so skewed we will always find it very difficult to change them.

But, the reality is…we can – if we try hard enough!

Now I look back on it, I realise what a load of bollocks that is and have set out trying to make money my friend and not my enemy. I have to say that I have had some success but am still working diligently at it every day. It’s amazing how prevalent this belief is though and how hard it can be to fight against it.
