Who doesn’t remember Tina Turner’s classic “We don’t need another hero…” ? Her amazing song inspired me to the this blog post’s title “We don’t need another MLM pre-launch, we don’t need another ground floor…” when blazing my trail through my Facebook inbox every morning.

Let’s face it: Every MLM opportunity used to be a ground floor opportunity one day. And when our mothers gave us birth, we could neither talk nor walk.

At the end of the day, we grew up and learned all that and way more.

Odds are that nearly 100 % of all babys survive and learn everything they need to learn. So nature provided us with an excellent proven and duplicatable system to help babys grow up, at least in industralized countries.

How is it in business ? Odds are that 9 out of 10 businesses fail regardless if they are traditional or (internet) network marketing.

In MLM alone, most of us know that 97 % of all marketers fail (or at least give up before they are successful).

Most businesses fail in an early stage of their existence, in MLM within their first two years, for example iLearningGlobal. That was not a small dog.

These numbers aren’t funny, are they ?

If those numbers held true in raising kids, hardly anybody would want to have kids.

So what the hell drives people to join pre-launches and ground floor opportunities ?

There are other, more exciting and sexy ways to have fun and spend the money earned in a serious business.

That doesn’t mean that running a serious, profitable and solid MLM business isn’t fun.

It is fun to connect to other people, helping them grow their businesses and collect the money for doing so.

To me, that is fun and I enjoy it every day.

Otherwise I wouldn’t do it.

Is it about having fun ?

Is it about making money ?

Is it about GRQ ? (Get Rich Quick) ? Greed and ego ?

Is it the “Shiny Toy Syndrome” Shama Kabani describes in her amazing book “The Zen of Social Media Marketing” ?

I had people on the phone complaining that their ground floor opportunity didn’t deliver the ordered products and promoting the next pre-launch at the same time.

How crazy is that ?

The tragedy about that is that it sheds a very ugly light on our amazing industry, an amazing industry consisting of serious companies, professional leaders and distributors and satisfied customers.

Pre-launches and ground-floor opportunities often have none of the 5 pillars to your MLM success in place.

  1. Hi Oliver,

I think you have hit the nail on the head with this one. Everyday we are bombarded with the next big thing. Just last night I had a lady spam my inbox on FB looking for people in the UK.

Never met me before or even a friend on FB yet she claimed she was very successful and it was the only way she knew how to contact people in the UK.

The people who are doing this are looking for a quick fix whick will never happen. I say just buy a lottery ticket if you want a quick fix.

Great post Oliver and thanks for sharing.

  2. I agree it should be fun as well as being serious. I guess people jump around because they don’t see this industry as a real business; they are impatient and immature and they are not willing to apply the real principles of success – steady, daily action.

    Hi Charlie,
probably you’re pointing out the reason why people are jumping from opportunity to opportunity, they don’t see it as what it is: A business. Thanks for clarifying that.
Thanks for your comment and have a blessed weekend.

Oliver: I believe Charlie hit the nail on the head when he said, “…they don’t see this industry as a real business.”

People, I think, are led to believe by the myriad of posts each day on Facebook (at least on my feed) that they can be millionaires practically overnight and so, when it doesn’t happen right away, they’re on to the next big opportunity. These posters don’t realize they are doing a huge disservice to the population of people who are desperately looking for a way out of the financial mess they’ve created for themselves.

Network marketing is a business just like any other new enterprise; for those of us who are in it for the long term, we know that we need to spend the time planting the seeds that will allow our business to grow and flourish; as Oliver and I both know, ground floor opportunities and pre-launches don’t pass the “5 Pillar” test.

I have a friend on Facebook who joins every new opportunity and is promoting at least 5 at any one time.

I tell them that they are thinking small not big.

They are looking for a few hundred quick bucks and they just move on.

Hey Oliver! Finally, you are the first person I know to bring this up. I got hundreds of ‘spam’ emails telling me about the next BIG launch, next incredible deal… everyday. But we also know that many don’t last long. And that bring us to training people on how to evaluate MLM opportunities well, instead of jumping ML opportunities now and then. Nice post my friend!

  6. Oliver this is a sad condition for a lot of people. I say it doesn’t matter if a company is old or new do your homework and find out all you can about the company to see if it’s credible or not and what the leadership is about (just like you teach at Mentoring For Free). Then join a company that you have a passion about and that relates to you. I guess to summarize is the company credible and does it excite you in a real way to move you to action?

Oliver, it’s one more example of the herd mentality. People think that IF they get into a company at the very beginning, they’ll automatically be at the “top of the pyramid” and get rich with no effort. My advice to them: Go buy a lottery ticket. Your odds of winning are almost zero, but better than joining yet another network marketing opportunity and praying for magic.

Way to tell it like it is Oliver,
I am convinced that people just don’t want to have to work to experience success. In my opinion, that is why they are always hopping around from one ground floor opportunity to the next.

Network marketing is a business not a hobby. You must be committed and disciplined to reap the rewards of success in this business.

There are no shortcuts to success. Taking those GRQ routes are just a shortcut that will get you broke quick.

    Great post.

  9. Milena says:

Hemmm, a great topic to discuss Oliver. You are 100 % right when it comes to people who are pitching out this new pre launches without any plan, strategy, building a relationship etc.. But if a new company shows up, lets say its really good company with long term plans, with experienced people on the top, with great compensation plan, its normal that they will shoot a prelaunch and try to get many people interested in it. And those people are pitching it out simply cause they’ve just started and didnt go through companies training all the way yet. So I guess it has to be that way on the very beginning of one opportunity, than over time , it crystallizes and shows the results (good or bad). If the company is really great it will live long, members will learn how to promote it better, but there will always be newebies who join something ( old or new, good or bad) and who have to start somehow. Now I do have a tone of messages to erase every day as well, but I am not feeling hard about it. Cause the ones who upgrade their position and knowledge in time and understand whats this industry all about , they might stay in the game and keep that company alive for a long time.

  11. Oliver, You hit it right on. I hear so many new programs launching and then you get disappointed because you don’t make what they promised. I see a lot of people are jumping on the fast launching programs and then in one month you don’t see them anymore. Here today and gone tomorrow. I agree you have to learn the secret to success with your ten steps to success.

    Hi Veronica,

I recently had a guy who tried to pitch me for a deal: He said that it’s probably a scam, the founder was in jail before, I could google his name…but no risk involved because it doesn’t cost money.

I asked him if he doesn’t consider losing his reputation as a risk…never got an answer – he even deleted me as a friend. Good luck.

  12. I think the hypy prelaunch garbage
is simply gurus feeding off of each others lists.
They have big ones and all with 95% of folks
forever staying on the paying side of the cash register.

I blame the lottery mentality party on the buyers
but hey they have to start somewhere like we did.
Just be smart if you are new and pick something
    and stay with it.
Then find some picks and shovels for the whole
industry which is what I love to do.
That way everyone can build an extra income or more
just by using what they need anyway.
It’s how my mentors have taught us to teach others
how to scale up into your next deal.

    Hey Oliver,

great topic my friend, and I´ve to say that
you just have to be task oriented and by
doing 18 different things at once, you will
    rarely succeed..

Made that experience before, and you can
accomplish multiple times more by simple
doing 2-3 tasks and stick with them until
you master them, and than you can get
    started with another project.

    Keep going,

    Great post Oliver.

It is amazing to me as well, the amount of people I have on my Facebook that are promoting one company, then a month later are with something different and then later something different again.

I believe it all comes down to mindset, people want this over night success and when they don’t get it, they quit and move to something else that looks promising. Put your blinders on, put your head down and get to work.

    Thanks for the post,

Hey Oliver, Great post. Just to add my two cents worth, I think that its a lack of education on anumber of levels. First people think Multiple Incomes means more than one MLM company and of course it does not. Second, The old montra’s of outdated upline spewage are alsways the same. That is where i see a lot of people lose money in this industry. They are taught to get out there and puke on everyone about their deal and if you do it enough times you will get a hit.
The problem with that thinking is, I feel we have become numb and frustrated with advertising tactics that are constantly spamming us. I believe the new order of sales is in the old order of ‘Giving Value’. Being loyal to our customers and potential customers.

p.s. Say Hi to Michael for me it has been a few years since talked.
