I borrowed the title of today’s post from a blogging friend of mine, Justine Simard. She published a video post called Cultivating Burning Desires and it struck a chord in me.
Let me explain.
I am publishing a series at the moment about my lessons on Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and grow rich”, and the second chapter is about desire, burning desire.
Among other highlights on Justine’s video, she said that cultivating a burning desire is about making the unnecessary necessary. This sentence really struck a chord in me.
Why ?
It’s about dealing with doubt. “My” doubts aren’t saying: You can’t do that. Well, I mean, that’s already a huge success because it means that I can do it ! But “my” doubts are trying to sell me that my desires, my dreams and goals aren’t NECESSARY.
As you may have noticed through several videos on this blog, my family and I live in a beautiful place in Germany. I could imagine perhaps two or three places in Germany that would also be adequate, and that would be Lake Constance area, Freiburg (it’s close to France) or Bamberg in Franconia.
How unnecessary is it wanting to leave this place ?
Pretty unnecessary, right ?
However, among other ideas, my dream consists of living on Guernsey, a little island in the English Channel between France and the UK.
I would want to live there and own a nice house rather sooner than later.
It’s also entirely unnecessary to drive with a Bentley on roads that allow no more than 35 mph, do you agree ?
So what do you do if driving a Bentley is also an inexplicable part of your burning desire ?
Justine gave me the answer: It’s about making the unnecessary necessary.
Thanks to her input, I don’t take care any more if it’s truly necessary or not. I don’t try to convince myself anymore that it is necessary. What a relief !
I admit freely that it is unnecessary and I say at the same time: So what ? I DON’T CARE !
I want it, I have a burning desire for it – no need, no room for rationalizations.
Beware of rationalizations – they are dwarfing your dreams.
Thank you Justine for the inspiration.
So what is your opinion ?
I always love your feedback, so please leave me a comment down below with questions, thoughts, or feedback.

Hi Oliver, I too am a friend of Justine’s! Today I syndicated this post of hers also…you are both great contributors to the network marketing community. I am very much enjoying receiving your newsletters…
I pose the idea also of making what we deem ‘necessary’ oft times to be ‘unnecessary’ in many cases when we assess whether it aligns with our values… In other works we think stuff we do is meaningful, but really much is it is hollow and meaningless in relation to our goals….

Hi Juli,
thanks for your comment, very much appreciated also your compliments and acknowledgement. Glad you like my newsletters.
It certainly depends on our core values what we consider as necessary or not.
Take care

Hey Oliver that’s a neat insight. I think its a nice perspective shift. The apathetic and ambivalent are entitled to their lack of ambition and its hard to argue that once our basic hierarchy of needs are covered such as food, shelter etc then why bother aspiring to more…
Its a sort of paradigm shift like you discuss that ignites the passion to head in unnecessary directions with the desire to reach uncommon experiences Cheers Kiaran
incidentally my sister has a German student staying with her in Ireland who swears Bavaria is NOT part of Germany! lol

Hi Kiaran,
Bavaria is Bavaria, they have something special. It’s so special that only folks from Bavaria can see it
Yeah, it’s really a paradigm shift. At the end of the day, it’s the same amount of effort to keep up the basic needs or strive for uncommon experiences. The work is always the same.
Thanks for your comment.

Hi Oliver,
I can totally understand where you were coming from with this post, there have been things in my past that I felt were unnecessary but still they became a necessary very quickly. They pretty much took over my entire thought process, and my daily activities.
As in my business as many others like me, I know that we all think, eat, breath our business and we definitely make sacrifices and do things that normal people would not do.
Thank you for the great post !!!!

Hi Robert,
thanks for your comment. I’m glad you were able to relate to it. We should make sure that the sacrifices don’t become too big, shouldn’t we ? Today’s age is not the age of martyrs anymore, am I right ?
Take care

Hi Oliver,
I hope you are an affiliate with the tourist board of both these place… I’d like to visit them! Necessary to live there?…
What is necessary? food and air, basic warmth and shelter? arguably, but even that’s only necessary if you want to live. It’s relative to what’s acceptable to you.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently, because what I believe to be necessary for me has changed greatly in the last few years. I spent a good deal of time living in the mountains in India, eating rice, dal, a few vegetables and meditating. Not much was necessary for me at that time.
Now I have a very different perspective. I require comfort, beauty, a certain degree of convenience and various levels of technology in order to function in the way I feel to be right for myself and my family right now.
Relative to my situation, nothing has changed. One thing I’ve learned through all this is that whatever you deem ‘unnecessary’ the universe will not give you.
It’s up to you…
Thanks for this interesting post!

Hi Jym,
no, I’m not affiliated with them
You are invited, today to Tübingen/Germany and tomorrow to Guernsey.
The simple life can be a good one, definitely. Because simple doesn’t mean poor or primitive.
I could spend the whole day outside with sports and play. But I wouldn’t want to sleep in a tent after that. I prefer a comfortable hotel with sauna and a nice dinner and huge warm bed.
What I loved on Guernsey or in Brittany/France is their seafood. Some oysters with “roses de Roscoff” (a special variety of onions) and a glass of chablis or champagne is simple luxury.
Amazing is also “crêpes au caramel à beurre salé maison”, extremely thin pancakes with caramel made with salted butter – accompanied by a glass of cider.
The choice is ours, if I want a five-course dinner in a luxury restaurant, so be it. It’s not a question of necessity.
Thanks for sharing.
Take care

Absolutely Oliver!
You can’t care about what other people think, because if you do it will definitely hold you back. I sometimes have to remind myself of the saying “what others think of me is none of my business”
My dream car is a Mercedes SL65. Of course cynics will say what’s the point of paying all that money for all that power if you can’t use it? This always comes from people who have no idea what it’s like to be abundant and rich.
Go for it, Oliver. I’ll be very excited when you move to Guernsey in a few short years.

Hi Oliver,
I love that phrase, making the unnecessary, necessary! I could go for miles on those four words alone now that I understand your perspective of it. I wonder how many times I’ve held myself back because I was craving something that was really unnecessary. For example, I want to finish getting my pilots license and I’ve started it three times but things in my life took priority and I’ve pushed it to the “later” pile because it was not necessary.
Wow…you certainly gave me food for thought. Oliver!

Hi Heather,
that’s exactly how I felt when hearing these words on Justine’s video. Good luck for your pilots license. Go for it.
Glad that I was able to deliver you some food for thought.
Thanks for your comment.

Hey Oliver,
I think this is going to be a common reply on “It’s about making the unnecessary necessary.”
Creating that burning desire backed up with faith and action will allow you to achieve what you want. Go For It!!!

Hi Josh,
action is definitely important. Action without burning desire and faith is pretty much aimless “work here, work there”. It can feel like torture because you work and work and you know deep down that something’s wrong or missing.
Thanks for your comment

Very thought-provoking post Oliver…and Josh hit the nail on the head with “Creating that burning desire backed up with faith and action will allow you to achieve what you want.” That’s how I’ve lived my life and regardless whether or not my ultimate goal was “necessary” or “unnecessary”, I have always achieved it.

Hi Karen,
thanks for your comment and congratulations to your success. What you and Josh write is definitely the key, action is also essential. Action without burning desire and faith is worthless, and burning desire and faith without action as well.
Take care
