Hello everybody, mindset – we write a lot about the right mindset that is necessary for true success in business and life.

The normal case is the following: We are all on our personal entrepreneurial journey and realize at some point in time that we have a self-limiting belief system – our mindset – we adopted from our environment when we were children and youth, predominantly from our loving and well-meaning parents.

We realize that we have to rewire our brain and get rid of these self-limiting beliefs, nothing new so far, right ? That’s personal development.

For those who have children I want to share with you something I recently experienced with a prospect I had for my MLM business: Be careful how you programme your children.

A lady from Eastern Europe, currently living in the UK, wants to get rid of her job, desperately. She’s working long hours, travelling more than 2 hours a day to get to her job and back home.

She knows that it is possible to make money on the internet and eventually get ride of her J.O.B.

She downloads my mentor’s ebook “Success in 10 steps” and devours it. We have several conversations via Skype, I arrange a coaching call with my mentor.

She’s definitely interested in what I have to offer. I feel that she has a strong desire.

But she was sitting on her fence and didn’t decide. That’s OK because it’s about her timing, not mine.

What really shocked me was the following: Her grown son (more than 20 years old) warned her about all the dangers and crooks on the internet – that’s why she didn’t do anything, despite her strong desire.

A desire not strong enough to break the rules she set up in the education of her son – or am I going too far ?

The lesson: Be careful what you tell your kids – it might backfire on you when you want to make a change and you’re supposed to break your own rules.

So what is your opinion ? I always love your feedback, so please leave me a comment down below with questions, thoughts, or feedback. And (yes, here’s my call to action) please share this post with your Twitter and FB friends by clicking on the share buttons below. I appreciate you telling others.

To a prosperous life,

10 Responses to “Mindset – When Kids Block Their Parents”

  1. I can think of a few times that’s happened to me! Thankfully it has also worked the opposite way. My son James was pretty good at stopping me when I complained about how inadequate I felt, or how little I felt I was getting accomplished. And it was James who told me one day that I needed to stop “talking” about what I was learning through Success in 10 Steps, and start DOING something about it! And that’s when I started building my business the Success in 10 Steps way.

  2. Awesome Post Oliver!

As a society, parents, teachers and friends – we need to be more aware of our fears and limiting beliefs that we are inflicting on our children.

More and more every week I am also talking to lovely people who are so frightened to take that step in changing their lives. I believe the biggest influence is the negative media that seems persistent in creating a fearful society – im sure for the benefits of the few.

Love your post Oliver – thank you for sharing :)

    Hi Amanda,

thanks for your thoughtful comment. Our biggest enemy is fear. That’s for sure.

If we asked a child if she or he finds the career path “school-work-die” attractive, they won’t say “no” to it, right ?

However, we manage to sell them that it’s the only path that’s possible. How insane is that ?

    Hey Oliver,

this story really inspired me to take more and more action. Even if there´s something that is blocking our ability to make the right move, we can still get throught it.

Timing is everything, and I think the best moment for a change is always NOW.

    Keep going.

  4. Hello Oliver,

Thanks for sharing that story. It can really happen to any one of us. So as a parent, we always need to be careful as to what we must instill in our children’s mind especially with the little ones. A great challenge for all of us. Mindsetting is a very powerful tool since the moment a certain idea sinked in, it’s so hard to bend or change it. This is a very interesting and thought-provoking post.

    Keep it up,

    Ana

    Hi Ana,

thanks for your comment. Last weekend, there was my mother’s 60th birthday. And I met a lot of relatives I don’t meet very often. It’s another world, let’s face it, it’s another world once you start getting rid of the dogma of working a J.O.B. Amazing.

With that said: Yes, we really have to be careful what we teach our kids by word and action.

    Take care

    Oliver,

Your post reminded me of a quote from a popular children’s educational show in the US called “The Magic School Bus”. The science teacher who took her students on adventures in the bus would always say to the children, “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy.” And that’s how they learned new things. My two boys used to watch these shows when they were younger and to this day they still repeat that saying and more importantly live that philosophy. If you don’t take risks in life, you will never achieve your dreams.

    Cheers,
