Think And Grow Rich – Decision – Lessons From Chapter 8: THE MASTERY OF PROCRASTINATION – The seventh step towards riches
This chapter of “Think and grow rich” deals with a silent killer: Procrastination or the bad habit of indecision.
I have been working with Mentoring for Free for 9 months now, whenever people were struggling in their businesses, for example with generating leads, or getting organized or getting started at all, it all came down to two possible reasons:
1. They didn’t figure out their personal WHY as outlined in Success in steps (in Napoleon Hill’s words: their definite purpose)
2. They didn’t sign up for the Mental Cleanse which is Napoleon Hill’s idea of the mastermind group, the very same idea of a mastermind group that made America’s declaration of independence possible, back in the 18th century.
By figuring out one’s WHY, every single one of Napoleon Hill’s concepts that have been discussed so far in “Think and grow rich”, comes into play:
–> Desire
–> Faith
–> Imagination
In order to figure out your true WHY, it’s important to know who you truly are. That means, you need to stop the chatter in your mind, the automatic suggestion from your past programming and current environment. That’s what the Mental Cleanse is designed for.
With a weak WHY or a WHY that is not yours, you will always suffer from indecision and procrastination. Even when making quick decisions, chances are you don’t like the outcome because it wasn’t your decision, it was the decision of someone else. But that’s even better than indecision or procrastination because you take at least action and can learn from your mistakes – if you learn from them and learn to make your own decisions that resonate with your WHY, your definite purpose.
People know nowadays that it is important to make quick decisions and that we will never know all the facts beforehand. That’s OK. Some persuasive people or heavy hitters know this very well and talk people into bad deals by making them think (or feel ?) that it is cool to make decisions without knowing at least some important facts.
In our industry of MLM, that would be joining an MLM company without reading and understanding the policies and procedures and crunching the numbers of a pay plan, for example. Reading and understanding these important documents is not procrastination, it’s simply good business, due diligence.
Those heavy hitters know exactly what they want, they have figured out their WHY and their definite purpose, the people who chose to become their victims are the exact opposite: They don’t know what they want and they don’t have a clue about their WHY and their definite purpose.
That’s why they’re making decisions that are not in alignment with their WHY and purpose. You can tell from their voice and words when calling them: They try…they try to build a home-based business, they try Facebook…You can tell from their voice and words their complete lack of desire and faith. Doomed to fail.
At least, trying’s better than not trying and doing the old stuff over and over again. But they musn’t stop there.
The best thing you can do to help them is sharing the free MLM ebook “Success in 10 steps” and helping them figure out their WHY and invite them to do the Mental Cleanse with Mentoring for Free and “Think and grow rich”
These two tools can help people to break that vicious circle of indecision and procrastination that kills so many desires and dreams silently.

Hey Oliver
I always know when someone does not have a strong enough “why”
, when they procastinate and/or do not do any work.
It is very easy to dream, or more accurately day dream, which is what many people do.
But when you have a true strong desire then nothing can stop you.

Hi Peter,
thanks for your comment. Dreaming is absolutely OK, but we must not stop there. It’s about deciding and taking action.

great post Oliver – success is rarely driven by rationality – 90% of all our purchases were probably driven by some degree of emotion rather than need.
There is a relationship between the size and intensity of the WHY and the inspiration for the HOW

Hi Kiaran,
people who don’t have a clear and powerful enough WHY will always look for an easier “how to” even if the “how to” in front of them is already is (after Robert Kiyosaki).
Thanks for your comment.

Hello Oliver,
It is indeed important to know your why because this will be your driving force and will help you to avoid the habit of procrastination and for once, make a decision and stand up for it. yes we encounters many people like this everyday in this business and we cannot really do anything for them unless they figured it out.

Hi Oliver,
Another brilliant lesson my friend.
People will try something and hope. They won’t make a firm commitment because they are afraid of success and the responsibility that comes with it. These are the people who jump from one system to another looking for hope.
We have a great system. And it works. What makes it work is you have made the decision to make it work, not hoping it will work for you.
Have an awesome day,

Hi Wayne,
thanks for your comment. Hope is great, but it is also two fold: Hoping the best and expecting the worst will get us nowhere. We have to deal with our conscious and unconscious set of expectations.

Great job Oliver, I feel everything we do or are revolves around our why. Without a purpose or a destination what do we have? Nothing!
I also think a lot of people won’t define their why’s because they are afraid of failing. If they never set a destination or goal it doesn’t matter if the make it there. This is where procrastination comes in.

Hi Rob,
fear of failure is one issue, fear of success another. I bet that a lot of people fear success, I feel like that from time to time.
Thanks for sharing your insights.

Hi Oliver,
I read today something by a person who said they put the “pro” in procrastination which made me smile at the absurdity of it. It felt almost like they were proud of ti. Having a definiteness of purpose or a motivating why certainly does help me get into action even when I’m nervous, unsure, or uncomfortable doing it.
I still procrastinate with some things…like the laundry basket sitting on the floor of my closet that is full of socks that need to be matched up. I guess I haven’t thought of a why motivating enough to make me want to fold them!

Hi Heather,
thanks for your comment. I also procrastinate with stuff I don’t like and I don’t have the time. Sometimes it’s stuff that needs to be done anyway. It’s about delegating these jobs.
Today we had a walk in the forest and ended up walking through a nice neighbourhood in a village before we reached our car. People were working in their gardens. One gentleman had some type of vacuum for the leaves from trees. And my wife said:”I want to have such a vacuum too.” And I said:”Is that the right attitude ? Why do you want the tool ? Why don’t you order the gardener ?”
We get what we demand from life, don’t we ?
Thanks again for sharing your insights.

Very true Oliver…procrastination is a killer! Clearly defining and staying focused on your ‘why’, and being passionate and persistent in what you do is mandatory in order to truly be successful. Thank you once again for your insights.

Hey Oliver!
You are the first person I found that is actually taking the “Think And grow Rich” book that every body tells everybody else in our industry to read…and explaining it!
But who actually reads it? Then, who actually teaches the awesome content therein? You are doing such awesome work at that!
More people seriously need to know this stuff!
P.S. Thanks for your good comment on the video I posted on my blog.

Hi Robert,
a lot of people read it – but most of them read it alone, without being part of a mastermind group. That is a huge mistake. It’s one of the basic principle to have access to and be part of a mastermind group (chapter 10)
Thanks for your initial comment on my blog – and your more than welcome with my comment on yours.
Have a blessed Sunday and take care

Hi Oliver
Great chapter and one we would do well to review after turning on the TV. With respect to “know yourself”, back in the early 1980s I bought a cassette course about time management, maybe by somebody named Boggs?? The first cassette opened with knowing yourself and listing your priorities in life. Using these, time management (and lack of procrastination) followed in securing those priorities.
