What are your favourite charities ?

Any successful person acquired the habit of donating money or time (or both) to worthwile causes – in most cases before they made their fortune.

It’s about paying it forward and giving back.

Robert Kiyosaki says it in “Rich Dad Poor Dad”: If you need money, give money.

He points out as well that it is important to give for the sake of giving and not for the sake of wanting something.

Give and you shall receive, right ?

Please watch the following video:

Formerly we didn’t donate much money to charities throughout the year, if ever in Christmas time.

Our excuse was:”We don’t have the money.”

And:”Some day, when we have money, we’ll donate.”

Some day, the eigth day, the day that never comes.

The “when” was more an “if”…

More than three years ago, we started donating on an irregular basis when we felt that we had the money…that was an important step.

Time after time, tithing became a habit of us.

We love to support worthwhile causes in order to simply help and as one way of expressing our gratitude for our blessings.

Establishing a foundation is an important part of our life vision and our WHY.

Leaving a legacy is key.

What are your favourite charities you are supporting and what is your personal motivation for doing so ?

  1. Hi Oliver,

Great idea for a post. I have always felt passionate about the Girl Scouts and I have donated both financially and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader for years.

At times in our life when I didn’t feel like I could financially donate to something, I would regularly donate our kids outgrown clothing, furniture, and things we were no longer needing to the Salvation Army. For a few years now we’ve purchased gifts for a mom and her kids through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. That’s been a neat experience.

I have been thinking about the neat things that have been done online recently, like the Facebook training program where everything they raised was donated to the Make A Wish foundation. It was so neat to see people giving of their time and talents to raise money for something, and it really inspired me to do something with that concept soon.

And finally, a couple of years ago my husband rode his bike in the Scenic Shore 150 which is a 150 mile bike ride up the lake Michigan shore in Wisconsin to benefit the Lukemia and Lymphoma society. His mom is battling (and winning) a blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma, so raising money to sponsor his bike ride was a very moving and emotional experience for us. She came to see us and I drove her along the route so we could stop and see my husband at his rest spots along the way, and watching him cross the finish line was very exciting and inspiring. About a month ago, I joined a health club with the goal of getting healthy enough to ride with him this next summer. This is a huge and intimidating personal goal for me, but one that I feel excited about because it can benefit kids and adults with cancer, while it benefits me in getting healthy too. Maybe I’ll try to combine our fund-raising with a training program or something this year! :)

Thanks for creating a movement of giving back. I think that when we get creative and learn to share our finances, our talents, and our passions, we can do great things in this world! :)

    Hi Heather,

thanks for sharing your personal story here on my blog. It touched me emotionally. Of course, all my blessings to your Mom-in-law and my very best wishes and energy for her.

The beauty about giving is that it’s not that about the sum but about the motivation and the actual doing. Who has plenty can give plenty.

Who hasn’t can do a lot of good anyway, by donating time for example or things one doesn’t need anymore instead of selling the stuff.

The decisive thing is not to invent excuses like so many do, ourselves included – formerly.

On the other hand, I’m excited about the number of people who like you donate throughout the year, regardless if it’s Christmas or not.

Good luck for your training programme, the motivation is definitely there, isn’t it ?

Thanks adding for adding so much personal value to my post.

    Take care

    Oliver

Very thoughtful post and video Oliver

I tend to favour charities that involve children.

I hope that by giving they will grow up and pass it on.

    Thanks

    Hi Peter,

thanks for stopping by. There are so many children who need our help, sometimes also in our local area and not only in some distant countries.

    Hi Oliver,

I am so pleased to raised this topic.

Without a doubt when one gives first one receives back tenfold. This does not always have to be financially based as service is just as valuable a contribution.

It may not always be what you expect and when you want it but the laws of the Universe operate in perfect harmony for our own good, always. Well this has been my experience.

Tithing is a powerful way to give back like you say. I give service and financially to a Sydney healing center that works with depressed and displaced local residents.

Like Ryan, I have a deep love for animals. The fact that human beings would torture any life but especially a helpless animal is beyond my comprehension. I contribute to a few animal rescue shelters around town.

    Hi Marcus,

glad you like my topic. Helping locally is very important also. Even though we live in a rich country, not everybody gets their share of wealth, for whatever reason. Misery not only is to be found in some distant countries, and, as you note, not only among humans but also among animals.

  4. Hey Oliver..

You’re so right. I think we should be donating money on a regular basis. Not just because it’s christmas , or because Haiti needs helps or because another catastrophe occurred around the world.

I recently donated to a Columbian Family for the holidays, to make sure they had food to eat. It does feel good :0)

  5. Hi Oliver,

Interesting post and great video. It’s all about giving back. It really is heartwarming to help other people knowing that there is no way they will pay you back.

I always donate to my local children charity. These kids deserve to have a good life too.

    Thanks for writing about this.

    Hi Oliver,

A very thoughtful post. I’m going to be a little controversial today. I have not been a very charitable guy in the past, but as I have begun to understand the universal laws of giving and receiving, I know how important this is.

Recently I have been giving away 10% of my income to organisations who are exposing the truth about the world we live in. Mostly it is to do with our economic situation and the truth behind global events such as 9/11, and the wars that are raging on.

I really appreciate the work that Architects & Engineers for 911 Truth are doing to enlighten people about the lies, coverups and deception of that horrific event – because this is a precursor to what we’re experiencing today.

I really appreciate what various freedom fighters are doing to uncover economic Ponzi scheme that we live in. For example, Bill Still has made an excellent documentary called The Secret of Oz that’s available for free viewing on YouTube.

So these are the guys I’m trying to help out as much as I can today.

    Take care,

    Hi Wayne,

it also took me a while to recognize that I have to do the first move. Waiting until we have the money is an excuse. Apart from that, I always had the money…

Well, I don’t find that your comment is that controversial ;-) sounds like an interesting causes.

Thanks for sharing and merry Christmas to you

    Hi Oliver,

What a thoughtful post, especially around Christmas time. (Although I missed it then.)

“It’s better to give than to receive.” I give to the local homeless shelter on a regular basis, but also, and especially around Christmas we give to all kinds of charities especially when they involve children or veterans.

    Have a blessed 2012!

    Hi Ilka,

thanks for your comment. As far as I am concerned, giving and recieving are equally important. But it’s definitely better to be able to give rather than being in need.

Happy New Year to you and your wonderful family too !

    Be blessed
