Do you have a backup plan ?

This post might ruffle some feathers and stir up some emotions…

Let me explain.

An important part of Think and grow rich is about decision and the mastery of procrastination.

Successful people are taking decisions quickly and change them – if it all – very slowly.

Unsuccessful people are taking decisions slowly – if at all – and change them quickly and permanently.

Let’s see what Napoleon Hill has to say about the habit of indecision in chapter 8:

“Indecision is a habit which usually begins in youth. The habit takes on permanency as the youth goes through graded school, high school, and even through college, without DEFINITENESS OF PURPOSE. The major weakness of all educational systems is that they neither teach nor encourage the habit of DEFINITE DECISION.”

Wow, that’s already powerful. He goes on:

“It would be beneficial if no college would permit the enrollment of any student, unless and until the student declared his major purpose in matriculating. It would be of still greater benefit, if every student who enters the graded schools were compelled to accept training in the HABIT OF DECISION, and forced to pass a satisfactory examination on this subject before permitted to advance in the grades.”

Now, how powerful is that ?

Who lacks of definiteness of purpose definitely needs a backup plan – a backup plan for their marriage and one for their business, for example.

Is that the major reason so many marriages fail because we have a backup plan in mind, just in case ?

Just in case of what ?

Is that at least one major reason so many people fail in our awesome MLM industry because they were taught in school and by their parents not to put all eggs in one basket ?

Just in case.

Just in case of what ?

You can’t be half pregnant. You are either pregnant or you aren’t.

But what if… ?

What if… two words that destroy so many dreams.

What if I fail ?

What if my spouse leaves me ? What if he or she cheats on me ?

What if my company goes belly up ?

What if I run out of money ?

Consider this: What if the men that fought for an independent America had asked themselves this question: What if … ?

Hm, chances are they asked themselves this question.

What would it have looked like ?

It only could be: What if I die ?

They may have asked themselves this question, but they went beyond it and did what they needed to do – without backup plan because there was none.

Now compare the question:”What if I die ?” with questions like “What if I fail ? What if I lose money ? What if my spouse leaves me ?”

The sky is falling, the sky is falling.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t consider risks in your life.

I’m just saying that you shouldn’t hold yourself back with “What if”-questions and buying into cheap justifications like “Don’t put all eggs into one basket.”

Rather ask yourself: What drives me wanting to asking these “What if”-questions ? What drives me wanting to play it safe and not to take calculated risks ?”

As you won’t lose your life about it, chances are it’s only the bad habit of fear that holds you back.

Fear of making a mistake, fear of failure, fear of making a fool of yourself…fear of the sky falling on your head.

I want to encourage you to go beyond your fears and say 100 % yes to your spouse and to your business – stop talking about a primary business. You don’t have a primary spouse and a primary life either.

Robert Kiyosaki says:”Life is found beyond our fears.”

If your relationship isn’t good then do something about it. Change it or leave it. Decide. 100 % yes or 100 % no.

If you have good reasons to believe that your “primary business” isn’t a solid one, then do something about it. Stop believing and start educating yourself how to choose a solid MLM business you can say 100 % yes to.

What is your opinion ?

    Hi Oliver,

What a powerful message in this post! I couldn’t agree with you more.

I have seen it many times where people are dwelling on the “what-if” questions and holding back.

Fear of failure is a huge enemy and a big dream thief. Once you overcome this hurdle, you can achieve anything you want in life.

You’re so right, you’re either in or out. Find you love and believe in and commit to it 100%.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, Oliver.

Powerful post, Oliver. Here’s a quote that I love on the topic: “The encouraging thing is that every time you meet a situation, though you may think at the time it is an impossibility, . . . once you have met it and lived through it you find that forever after you are freer than you ever were before. . . . You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. . . . The danger lies in refusing to face the fear, in not daring to come to grips with it. If you fail anywhere along the line it will take away your confidence. You must make yourself succeed every time. You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

    Hi Oliver,

It’s sort of like the pre-nuptial thing. You’re going into the marriage with the conscious thought that it could fail. There’s no belief or confidence there.
That’s no way way to enter into a new venture.

If you lack the confidence to do something then don’t do it until you get the confidence or at least until you can stop giving yourself reasons not to do something and you can start focusing on the reasons ‘to’ do something.

    Nice post, enjoyed it :-)

  5. Hi Oliver,

Great post. I especially love the line….”You can’t be half pregnant. You are either pregnant or you aren’t.”

A definite purpose keeps you focussed on your goals, and committed to them. Without a definite purpose, there is always room for retreat, and that does not lead to success (or only takes you halfway there).

Your post reminds me of the story of a General who sailed his army to a distant land, then had them burn their ships…..their only options were to survive or die.

Great post Oliver, and thanks for sharing.

    Hi Michael,

thanks for your awesome comment. I like that story…we seem to forget that we don’t die in today’s world so it should be a little bit easier to burn our ships !

A backup plan only distracts from the definite major purpose.

    Hi Oliver,

Excellent post, You hit the nail right on the head with this one. Before you even attempt to build a network marketing business, you should look yourself in the mirror and ask “Do I really want to do this?” If there is any hesitation maybe it isn’t for you.

I know before I chose a company, I did loads of research and I made the decision to put all of my efforts into it. Now this is my full-time job and I couldn’t be happier.

Everyone who reads this post, take what Oliver says to heart. Don’t ask “What if?” Be like Nike and Just Do It!

Hi Oliver, I totally get where you are coming from and being an all in person I have always had my eggs in one basket until a couple of months ago when I added Life Coaching to my list of things to complete, and even then it was only to add an ‘additional’ income stream.

I do believe it is good thought to have a back up plan, particularly in light of the Eiro Research Company going belly up that nobody saw coming. Adding additional sources of income to your life I think is always a good thing, but I do understand if you choose a company you need to be all in, or don’t bother.

two sides of the coin I suppose Oliver. You don’t want to approach things with a ‘what if’ attitude, but it’s nice to have other irons in the fire as a safety measure.

thanks for your direct to the point post! Jayne

    Hi Jayne,

thanks for your comment. Without second guessing in the special case of EIRO, there are definitely ways to tell upfront how vulnerable a company is. I have the information and I am willing to share it with anybody who is willing to educate oneself. Most people know know that we only have to apply what we know.

With that said, I am also adding income streams from real estate property, there’s nothing wrong with that. I am sure that I will write a book (or books) sooner or later when time is due. But I only have one network marketing business and I won’t do anything else that is even remotely related to network marketing or internet marketing.

I’m just curious, what do you think ?

Well to be honest Oliver, I am not sure I could handle another Networking Company! LOL… however I do like to pick up the odd affiliate and as I mentioned I am in the middle of a Life Coaching Certification.

I do have friends who juggle two or three Network Marketing ventures, but I wonder how they do it. I feel as though it would dilute your efforts.

I don’t have an issue having additional “internet marketing’ businesses though, as long as it is completely separate from my current company.

    Thanks for the discussion!

    More powerful thoughts Oliver…

It’s amazing how our lives are almost defined by the questions we ask. Somehow asking the right questions will lead us to the right answers, I love the way that you redirect the dangerous ‘What if…?’ to inquiring as to what is underneath, driving the fears which ask those questions…

Asking ourselves questions at the conscious level engages our subconscious to find answers… I like questions like “How can I build my business better, faster, stronger, more abundantly and in a more fun way than ever before today?” It’s amazing to see what comes up!

Thanks for sharing this thoughtful post mate

    Hi Oliver,

I guess this is what Noah St John defines as one’s WHY NOT TOs – all the reasons why not to do something, some of which may be known to us and others which are sub conscious.

Focusing on why we want to do something is as powerful as why we don’t want to do it, so the more we can direct our focus towards why we want to do something the less space we will allow for a backup plan to come into play.

I have never understood why people choose more than one primary business. To me it just means they are not making enough money from the one or more income streams they already have going. Wouldn’t it just make sense to focus on one and reap the long term benefits?

all these “what ifs” are certainly part of the “why not to”s that are safely stored in the subconscious mind.

I fully agree with your conclusions. I don’t know of any network marketer who became truly successful and wealthy with more than one MLM business.

    Oliver,

Powerful message there! I really like how Napoleon explains the reason for being indecisive. And really schools should do like what he said! There are too many people becoming unsure of themselves and as as result become more fearful of their actions and your “101 what if examples” illustrates that more. Also, too many people are caught up with their self-imposed limitations and wonder why never start doing the things that they’ve dreamt about while they were kids.
