Previous posts about a ghost of fear: Think And Grow Rich – The Ghost Of Fear Of Old Age Pt. 1 and Think And Grow Rich – The Ghost Of Fear Of Old Age Pt. 2

Similar to fear of old age, there’s no point in being afraid of death as the one and the other come inevitably.

Napoleon Hill points into the same direction when it comes to detecting the causes of this fear – mainly religious fanaticism.

It’s hard to tell what it does to people when they believe in the existence of hell, devil and burning in eternal fire.

Napoleon Hill says:”ETERNITY is a long time. FIRE is a terrible thing. The thought of eternal punishment, with fire, not only causes man to fear death, it often causes him to lose his reason. It destroys interest in life and makes happiness impossible.”

He goes on with the statement that in the “Catalogue of the Gods” are listed 30,000 gods “which man has worshiped (…) represented by everything from a crawfish to a man.”

He states that “it is little wonder that men have become frightened at the approach of death.”

Why do people believe that some religious leader may be able to allow fortunate souls into heaven and send unfortunate ones into hell ?

Even though we may or may not believe in heaven or hell consciously in our modern enlightened society, chances are that our subconscious is still occupied by such thoughts – where they are able to control us.

The cool thing is: We are entirely free to believe what we want and what suits us best – remember we can choose between 30,000 gods, that means 30,000 different notions of death, heaven and hell.

The only laws we can’t alter are the universal laws – and these religious beliefs are definitely not part of them.

In most cases, those religious beliefs are counterproductive if we want to build true faith.

Napoleon Hill writes:”In truth, NO MAN KNOWS, and no man has ever known, what heaven or hell is like, nor does anybody know if either place actually exists. This very lack of positive knowledge opens the door of the human mind to the charlatan so he may enter and control that mind with his stocks of legerdemain and various brands of pious fraud and trickery.”

According to Napoleon Hill, the best remedy for the fear of death is a “burning desire for achievement” because “a busy person seldom has time to think about dying.”

Does that mean that lack of burning desire induces and encourages fear of death ?

I’ll try an explanation in an upcoming post about the Think and grow rich-section about “Old man worry.

There’s no use worrying about it is there Oliver. After all we all come in the same way… we’re going to go out the same way! What happens after that… we don’t know. I’m hoping I’m going up and not down… but I’m certainly not worrying about it. those who are really afraid of burning in Hell…. they must have something theyre hiding!! LOL

    Hi Jayne,

thanks for your comment. I don’t know if people who are afraid of “burning in hell” have something to hide. As far as I am concerned, I am not afraid of something like hell, but most of us taught that if we do this and don’t do that, that it will have “consequences”. Not knowing what’s right or wrong and fearing an invisible instance or people who claim to know something about this invisible instance can be the hell on earth.

  3. Well Oliver,

Worries get us to nowhere. But personally I try to keep myself as busy as possible to avoid worrying about stuff. At the same time, it doesn’t mean that when I am not busy, I am worrying.

It all depends on how we approach the fear of death. Different perspectives lead to different consequences :)

    Cheers,

    Hi Jane,

thanks for your comment. Keeping ourselves busy to avoid to face our worries can be a way of evasion and of cementing our worries. Of course, I don’t know what holds true for you, just a thought.

    Hi Oliver,

I think that the belief that hell exists is just a way to keep ourselves in check, to keep us from doing bad things to each other.

What science has taught us over the past 200 years, has really taken away a lot of religious leaders power over humans. Yet still people are killing each other because of religious differences.

I don’t care what others believe, as long as they don’t try to push their beliefs on to me. To each his own.

Thanks for sharing Oliver and have a great day!

    Hi Ian,

    thanks for your comment.

The problem is that it keeps us in check also when it comes to doing good things to others and to ourselves. If people “think” that rich people don’t go to heaven, they are unlikely to realize their million or even billion dollar idea that might help millions of people.

Oliver, aloha. With 30,000 gods to choose from, certainly there is a belief for everyone. If we were to look at the origins of most “religions” and their evolutions, I believe we would find that they are about a person or a group of people controlling other people by setting out “rules” or “laws” for them that work to the benefit of the originators.

Since this is a post about the Ghost of Fear of Death, I will stay off my soapbox and comment on this topic.

What I believe, Oliver, is that if people love and embrace life, they do not fear death as an ending. It is the people who have never lived, never risked, never tried who have the greatest fear of dying because they never lived.

As long as you have excitement, passion for things in your life, the life force will flow through you and each day will be a glorious adventure. You will be so busy living your now and creating your magnificent future that you will have neither the time nor interest to worry about something over which you have no control.

What a great start to the week, Oliver. Thx so much. Until next time, aloha. Janet

    Hi Janet,

no worries. I love your off topic part of your comment as well. The topics are interwined anyway, aren’t they ?

I agree with you: Religion is about exercising power over people by the use of fear and guilt.

I also second you on that: Fear of death is the business of people who never lived their life to the fullest, who saved excitement for later, for someday. Someday, the day that never comes.

It’s interesting: Most people don’t get the difference between saying “I’m not afraid of death.” and “I don’t want to die.” They seem to believe that if they stopped being afraid of death, that they would agree with dying soon.

    Completely unrelated.

Thanks for beautiful and insightful comment.

    Take care

  6. Hi Oliver,

I must admit, as I approach 50, I grow a little excited. Why? Well, in Native American tradition, the rest of the tribe is not to listen to you or take your advice until you reach that age. They believed that until you had that much life experience, you really didn’t have much to say.

    I don’t really believe this myself, as I’m only 49 : 0, but I find it interesting.

As for all the gods out there, I make no pretense that I have any clue as to what happens after we die. I do have a strong hunch, however, that consciousness doesn’t just cease to be.

If we do our best to help others and leave the planet better than we found it, I can’t see any loving creator judging us to eternal damnation. I would thumb my nose at such a deity.

Death comes soon enough to us all, and there’s no point dwelling on it or living in fear of it. In some cases, most maybe, death might be the reward, as I’ve heard Dr. Wayne Dyer describe it.

Oliver, thank you for stirring my thoughts today. As always great to read what’s on your mind. Take care, my friend.

    Hi Gregory,

thanks for your comment. Nobody knows what happens after death because nobody ever came back. We have reports who were clinically dead. Reports that shake scientists’ bones. But that’s about it ?

It amazes me that people believe institutions like churches that they know what happens after death – that they even know the rules if people go to hell or to heaven. The truth is that nobody knows if either of them or both actually exist.

I am very happy for you that you get excited as you’re approaching your 50th birthday. I take the guess that this is not the rule, at least in Germany, because people’s fear of getting laid off increases tremendously.

Thanks again for adding value as usual.

    Take care

    Hi Oliver,
I think that some of the fear is the fear of the unknown. When I was a child I went through a period of fearing death. I had no religious background at that point in my life so I had no religious fearings. In fact I was more upset over someone telling me that there was *nothing* after death.

    Hi Stacy,

fear is anticipation of pain. Anticipation is about the future, it’s the unknown, as you note. However, the future doesn’t exist, only in our imagination. So does the Unknown.
