MLM: Learning The Skills From Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter Pt. 1

Would it be OK if I shared with you which skills I learned from Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter for my MLM business ?

If so, I have some bad news and good news for you.

The bad news is that it might be opposite to what your upline taught you – and to what you have taught so far to your downline.

The good news is that if you change it, you’ll become more successful and will make more money.

Would that be OK ?

Well, you know how, to become more successful and make more money in MLM you need to know what your job description is.

Everybody knows that if you don’t fulfill your job description in your job, you get fired.

MLM is no different.

The only difference is that you don’t get fired – you go broke.

That’s why, on the Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter event I recently attended, Tom was talking about the job description in MLM, but he started with sharing what the job description is NOT.

In my recent post MLM Success Secrets – What Secrets ? Pt. 2 I challenged you by sharing with you what’s not part of the job description in MLM…

A quick recap: According to Tom Schreiter, the job description in MLM is NOT about

–> attitude

–> being positive

–> making friends

–> building relationships

–> having a WHY until you cry.

So now what is the job description in MLM ?

It’s about getting prospects to make a decision to join your business or to buy your products.

In order to do that, we need some skills.

Skills are about knowing exactly what to say and exactly what to do, just like a dentist knows exactly which drill to take and which tooth to drill.

The single most important skill is speaking in a language our prospect understands.

The second most important skill is the ability to talk to the decision-making instance in the human mind.

What’s the point of talking to people in a language they don’t understand ?

What’s the point of talking to the part of the brain that doesn’t make the decision anyway ?

In pt. 2 of MLM: Learning The Skills From Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter I am going to expand on the four different languages you need to understand to talk to people correctly.

I’m just curious, what’s going to be easier for you, continuing to fail or learning the skills it takes to eventually become successful ?

If the latter holds true for you, please watch this short video that introduces part 2:

Would it be OK if you downloaded the free e-book right away and went to page 46 ? We need it for part 2.

    Hi Oliver,

I enjoyed your post and video and look forward to Pt 2.

The job description, “It’s about getting prospects to make a decision to join your business or to buy your products.” says it all as I understand it too.

I remember listening to sales guru, Ari Galper once and he said the problem for most network marketers is that they have two “products” they are selling, the opportunity and the actual products and this causes a conflict.

I am becoming increasingly convinced that it’s possible to sell the products on the front end and attract people to the opportunity later although this is not what is traditionally taught by companies. What are your thoughts?

    Hi Marcus,

    thanks for your thoughtful comment.

To your question: Being a customer or a distributor – i.e. business builder – are two completely different things. And if a company pays well in retailing (what they should), why involving customers in building the business if they don’t express interest themselves ? So it’s definitely to do what you suggest. If it makes sense certainly depends on how the pay plan of the company is structured and if the customer is really interested in building a business.

Unfortunately, many companies pay not very well for retail customers so nobody is interested in retailin. And nobody would buy the products if there wasn’t a compensation plan attached.

    Take care

    Hi Marcus,

This is a very interesting comment and since it hit a chord with me I’d like to chime in.

I heard someone say recently that in MLM we get paid for 2 things only …1) for recruiting and 2) for retailing products. I think that’s absolutely it, in a nutshell.

I have had people join me as customers who then turned around to become distributors because they loved the product…not the (aspect of the) money. I wish more companies would adapt the “Referring Customer” model where people can join as customers and still get paid a certain percentage if they refer friends or family.

Anyway, just my 2 cents …

  2. Hey Oliver,

That’s what it really comes down to is to get your prospect to make a decision whether or not to join your business or buy your products. Enough Said!!!

And I bet I know the 4 different languages, and I can’t wait to read it ;) Thanks for sharing!

    Hey Oliver,

A brief but powerful video you’re sharing in this post. I couldn’t agree with you more, these are very important questions:

“What’s the point of talking to people in a language they don’t understand?

What’s the point of talking to the part of the brain that doesn’t make the decision anyway?”

You’ll not succeed with prospecting if you don’t speak your prospects’ language and if you don’t know which buttons to press to get them to say the magic words :)

I look forward to learning about the four languages in your next post ;)

Thanks for sharing your insights, Oliver.

    Hi Oliver,

Very interesting post! It really got my thoughts going. So even a positive attitude, a great why, having build an absolute sound relationship if you don’t speak the right language your prospect may still not buy from you or join you in your business?

That will trigger a lot of aha moments :)

    Looking forward to part 2…

  6. I loved your reference as the only difference is you go broke versus getting fired. That’s a great way to look at it. I wonder if more people would look at it this way. I’m sure it will make a personal difference for many.

    Have a great day, Oliver.

Oliver I am on Tom’s newsletter list but have never seen him live. His job description makes total sense to me. It is the bottom line that is for sure. I like it.
I think the other things – like attitude and having a why are necessary for us to keep going, but they are not the job description. The biggest why in the world and best attitude will not pay the bills without people joining us in business or buying our products.

    Great video too.

    Hi Sue,

thanks for your comment. He even said that you can become mega successful with a bad attitude if you know what to do and how to do it. The question is however if this is fun and we are able to keep it up. That’s why I agree with you that attitude and motivation are necessary as well.

    Hello Oliver,

I’m happy for discovering this post, and let me please to share with you one comment. One of the main thoughts that must have a blogger is to answer the question: What are my objectives? It’s not the same to write because you want to feel good, because you want to earn money, or simply show your texts to your friends.

    Best regards!
