Previous post in this series: MLM Success Secrets – What Secrets ? Pt. 1

In my previous video post – I recommend you go there first by clicking on the link above – I wrote and spoke about the fact that you need your WHY, a strong enough WHY that makes you cry and that keeps you going no matter what.

My good friend and mentor Michael Dlouhy explains to you exactly how to do that in his free MLM e-book Success in 10 steps.

This WHY is the driving force that keeps you going no matter what. That includes learning the skills it takes to become successful in the MLM industry.

Please go to this post where Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter explains that beautifully: MLM Prospecting Made Easy With Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter

When I attended his recent workshop in Germany a few weeks ago, I felt like getting a cold shower when he talked about the job description in network marketing.

Why ? Because it seemed to be opposite of what I was taught and what I was teaching (and practising) myself.

According to Tom Schreiter, the job description in MLM is NOT about

–> attitude

–> being positive

–> making friends

–> building relationships

–> having a WHY until you cry.

So now before you hit the back-button right away, let me just tell you that it took me a while to realize what he meant by that and that it’s not in contradiction to what I explained to you in the video in my previous post (link above)

There are two types of people who fail in the MLM world today: Those who are entirely focused on the mental side and forget about the skills, yes, the how-to and those who don’t have a clue about the mental aspects of our business and buy how-to-products after how-to-products.

Well, both end up being broke because they don’t make money.

So we need to learn some skills to make money in this business, right ?

The secret (Hehe !) is that a strong enough WHY will help you learn the skills more easily and keep going when the going gets tough.

The WHY won’t replace the skills, and vice versa.

Example: When you took driving lessons, you had a strong why to get the driving license, hadn’t you ?

This motivation got you to take boring theoretical and exciting practical driving lessons to learn the rules and the skills to survive in road traffic (and let other people survive).

It also got you to pay a lot of money to the driving instructor and take a boring and frightening theoretical and exciting and frightening practical exam.

And most people also follow the traffic rules in order not to lose their license once they got it.

If you are like me, you had your issues when you first got started getting driving lessons (remember that we normally have manuals in Germany, now I’ve got an automatic, it’s amazing) – but your motivation kept you going because you needed the skills to get the license.

So don’t over-complicate your why, your purpose and don’t get caught up in thousands of how-to-strategies either.

You neither want to be a “highly motivated idiot” (Big Al) nor a fool that’s always looking for a faster tool.

Hm, what do you get when you give a fool a faster tool ?

You are right: A faster fool…

Well you know how, it might be a good idea to use your WHY to also learn the skills it takes to make money in MLM

Isn’t that our real MLM goal ? You may want to refer to this post about your real MLM goal.

That’s exactly what I am going to expand on in upcoming posts – sharing with you what I learned from the ‘Big Al’-workshop when it comes to making money in your business, starting with MLM: Learning the skills from Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter Pt. 1

Well, with more than enough money it’s easier and more fun to conquer the world, isn’t it ?

What is your opinion ?

Oliver, you nailed it, having a STRONG enough “why” to keep going when the going gets tough is the secret! Couldn’t agree more!

Success does not come with a free lunch, my grandma said this many times over(of course it was said in dutch so I am doing a literal translation) “without a lot of bother, we have nothing.” In other words, we have to apply ourselves in a diligent manner if we are to experience success in anything and its doubly true in building a business offline or online! Besides, if we are commited and excited to help make a difference in the world, one person at a time, why would we do any less then to give it our all in terms of learning the skills correctly and taking the business steps in an orderly sequence???

Thanks for sharing Oliver! Take care,

    Hi Karlene,

thanks for your wonderful comment and sharing your grandmother’s wisdom. So true…

Commitment and excitement can and should go hand in hand, the head and the heart united.

    Interesting post Oliver.
You had me wondering where you were going there for a moment, when you seemed to be contradicting yourself. Then I understood what you were saying, and it made more sense.

    An interesting article indeed,

    Hi Martin,

lol, so you probably felt like I did when I heard Big Al’s words in the workshop – it was really a cold shower.

But like you I was able to connect these ideas so that they made sense to me ;-)

    Thanks for your comment.

  3. Hi Oliver,

You know, I failed my driver’s test the first time, and I was soooo frustrated. I made up my young mind that I would never get my license, and just use taxis.

Fortunately, my “why” was pretty huge, as is the case with most 16 year old males, so I practiced and passed the exam the second time. Man, did it feel good!

The same is true, like you mention, with network marketing. You fall, it hurts, you get back up because it’s the only way you’re going to get what you want.

Awesome post, Oliver. Keep up the great work!

    Hi Gregory,

I knew that someone would be able to resonate with that example. You never really pictured yourself without a license for the rest of your life, so you started again and eventually succeeded.

    Right ?

    Thanks for your comment.

  4. Isn’t this the truth. My first why was pretty generic when I first got into the industry, but the futher I got into it, the deeper my why got, and my mind became more and more curious how I can fullfill my why, which get me the fuel and energy to look at different strategies. I see where you were going with this :) I love it! Thanks for sharing Oliver

    Hi Sherman,

conquering the world was pretty generic too and I was only parroting what I read in a biography about Madonna. I didn’t have a single clue about the what and how, i didn’t even know that Facebook existed.

    Thanks for your beautiful comment.

    Take care
