Written lesson plan about this chapter (November 2010): Think And Grow Rich – Persistence – Lessons From Chapter 9
Persistence – The sustained effort to induce faith – The eighth toward riches
There’s already a lot of good stuff contained in this subtitle.
The entire lesson plan simply could be about the subtitle.
Napoleon Hill writes at the beginning of this chapter:”PERSISTENCE is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. The basis of persistence is the POWER OF WILL.”
And:”Will-power and desire, when properly combined, make an irresistible pair. Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold-blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is willpower, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to insure the attainment of their objectives.”
He goes on: Henry Ford has been generally misunderstood to be ruthless and coldblooded. This misconception grew out of Ford’s habit of following through in all of his plans with PERSISTENCE.”

Aloha Oliver, great post and topic. And I think you’re right people do misunderstand successful entrepreneurs, in how they come across. But most know that in order to get where that person is at, it takes tons of dedication and commitment and action to get the same results, which most lack of. I enjoyed your recorded message as well.
PS..luv your accent and feel free to come by sometime. Mahalo, Lanikee.com

Hi Lani,
thanks for your comment. Glad you love my accent. When I hear myself, I think:”Wow, pretty strong German accent.”
Entrepreneurs are often misunderstood because they’re willing to do what most people don’t want to do.
Take care

Oliver persistence is what makes the difference in so much in life. Provided we are pursuing worthwhile goals in the correct manner not with a “blunt axe” as you put it.

Hi Steve,
there’s really no point in being persistent with goals that aren’t worthwile. Thanks for pointing that out.

Lets be persistent in reaching our goals and never giving up regardless of anything. If Henry Ford did it so can we!!

Hi Lawrence,
thanks for your comment. So true, Henry Ford didn’t have the internet. We have it. So we can do it as well.

Great post, Oliver! I really liked the part of the chapter where he tells of his efforts to get a V-8 engine. His engineers told him that it was impossible, and he told them to make it happen. They told him the same thing, and he responded the same way. Eventually, he got his V-8 engine. It’s really amazing how a vision can help us along in our persistence.

Hi Steve,
yes, it’s persistence close to stubborness. Or is it already the latter ?
Thanks for your comment.

Oliver… yes ‘sustained’ effort and persistence. The absolute key. Even if we feel not so shiny on some days… the bottom line is to keep going.
I love the blunt axe analogy too. You have to do what creates the best results than spin your wheels not getting anywhere but not taking the time to make the necessary adjustments.
Loved the post and audio.
Thanks Oliver

Hi Jayne,
thanks for beautiful comment. Even if we don’t feel shiny and persistence doesn’t sound sexy, it will create sexy results…
The axe has to be sharp, absolutely.

Nothing worthwhile in life can be achieved without persistence. It something that most people have problems with. Most people fail to remain consistent because they fail to manage their emotional state on a daily basis. Cool blog post Oliver. Talk soon.

Sustained effort is very important, many people expect things to be easy and quick. I see people give up because things do not happen instantaneously and they obviously do not have sustained effort!
Great points about the importance of mentorship!

Your post reminds me that sometimes, what matters is dogged determination, just refusing to give up until what I want is made manifest.
I am a very determined person but do not always believe in myself, so I see that faith must be the first target. Because like the book says, combined, persistence and faith are unbeatable!

Hi Jeanine,
thanks for your comment. I like that: Dogged determination.
I just found out that it’s easier to build faith and to learn to believe in oneself if we have someone who believes in us – that’s the whole concept of successful mentoring, and also parenting.

Hi Oliver,
Thanks for the inspiring lesson. Persistence is the key to success. I must say that I am so far into blogging and still here, with a successful blog, because of my passion and persistence. Not just passion.
Thanks for the great stuff.
Cheers,
Jane.

Hi Oliver,
Listening to your lesson plan flooded me with many emotions based on my life while I was going through school. When I was going for my Ph.D in Reproductive Science, I had little confidence and faith in myself. I always felt inferior to my colleagues who seemed to be more polished and more knowledgable than myself.
My parents had faith in me when I did not have faith in myself. My advisor had faith in me, too. They were my support network, and they continued their efforts until I began gaining confidence, realizing I was just as smart as the next person, and finally… have faith in myself. Without my parents and my advisor I would never have made it.
Getting an advanced degree is as much about persistence and faith as anything I know. It’s a long, sometimes lonely road and it’s necessary to have people who believe in you, first and foremost.
Thanks for inspiring me to relive this wonderful experience in my life, Oliver!

Hi Bob,
thanks for sharing with us that my lesson plan flooded you with many emotions, appreciate that.
I agree that it is a lonely road sometimes, the same in business, even though we work as a team and form networks. Formerly I couldn’t stand it when someone told me that they believe in me when I wasn’t because I didn’t know it’s the natural order of things that others believe in us first.

Hi Oliver,
Thank you for believing in me, and for making me realize that my belief in others is powerful as well! I always say that my participation and journey in Mental Cleanse is nothing but a gift from God. If it wasn’t for this, I may very well be close to the man with a blunt axe you’re speaking of.
I must also share that the Slight Edge philosophy has caused dramatic effects in my life, and I know that by persistently practicing this philosophy, I am sure to gain strength from your belief in me, to continue believing in others, and to believe in myself with unshakeable faith!
Thanks so much for this very inspiring post.

Hi Rowena,
thanks for your beautiful comment as always. I think it’s a good sign that I don’t have to force myself to believe in you, because I simply feel and know that you’re going to make it.
Also, the way you write about the Slight Edge makes me want to believe that it has already kicked in in your life, has it not ?
Take care
Oliver
