Written lesson plan about this chapter (November 2010): Think And Grow Rich – The Subconscious Mind – Lessons From Chapter 12

Think and grow rich: Chapter 12 – The Subconscious mind – The Connecting Link – The eleventh step toward riches

Let us read what Napoleon Hill writes at the beginning of this chapter:”THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND consists of a field of consciousness, in which every impulse of thought that reaches the objective mind through any of the five senses, is classified and recorded, and from which thoughts may be recalled or withdrawn as letters may be taken from a filing cabinet. It receives, and files, sense impressions or thoughts, regardless of their nature.”

And:”You may VOLUNTARILY plant in your subconscious mind any plan, thought, or purpose which you desire to translate into its physical or monetary equivalent. The subconscious acts first on the dominating desires which have been mixed with emotional feeling, such as faith.”

And:”Consider this in connection with the instructions given in the chapter on DESIRE, for taking the six steps there outlined, and the instructions given in the chapter on the building and execution of plans, and you will understand the importance of the thought conveyed.”

Everything clear ?

Not to me.

Please listen why my own subconscious mind is still a black box to me:

  1. Hi Oliver,

Here’s my take on the subconscious mind:

Its purpose is our survival, both as a race and as individuals. Keep in mind that it cares nothing for our happiness, only that we survive another day.

With this survival in mind, it strives to maintain the status quo. Why? Because the status quo is safe. We survived it, so let’s create more of it. At least that’s how it thinks.

You mention the subconscious mind is stupid, and that’s very true in an important way. For example, the subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. But, we can use this to our extreme advantage.

For instance, if it wants to create more of the status quo, then we’ve got to convince it that wealth and prosperity are the status quo, even though that might not be our current physical reality.

We can do this by consistently visualizing what we want. When we visualize, we incorporate all our senses, to fully convince the subconscious that this is our current reality.

Eventually the reality you’ve created in you subconscious must manifest in the physical realm. It’s always so, whether it’s a good or a bad reality.

Sorry for rambling, Oliver, but I’m also a hypnotherapist, and the subconscious mind is something that fascinates me.

Excellent post, by the way. Always great to hear your thoughts. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Gregory,

so true that our subconscious doesn’t discriminate between reality and fiction.

I like you rambling, by the way, and I din’t know that you are hypnotherapist. So I have one question for you: Is hypnosis the only way to influence the subconscious mind to consider something as true and act upon it ?

Thanks for adding value here, very much appreciated.

    Gregory McGuire Reply:

    Hi Oliver,

No, hypnosis is not the only way to influence the subconscious mind. Affirmations, like Napoleon Hill talks about, are also extremely effective, but in my experience they have to be done in massive quantities before they’re effective.

Also, just plain daydreaming works. If you can do this on a regular basis, and incorporate all your senses and infuse it with emotions, you can convince the subconscious mind that this is indeed reality. It will then act upon that reality.

You’ll need to do this an average of 30 to 90 days before you’ll begin to see results, but it’s well worth the energy. Plus, it’s just fun.

I hope this answers your question. Talk soon.

I enjoyed reading your conversation about this, it’s fascinating. So by consistently leveraging daydreaming over 30-90 days, being sure to infuse genuine emotion and belief, we can convince the subconscious mind to act upon an objective.

    Hi Oliver,

I think trying to understand the subconscious mind is a fairly impossible task but knowing that it is responsible for directing our behavior is paramount so that we don’t fool ourselves into thinking we are in control when we aren’t.

Being aware that this formidable agent that can work against us unless we take responsibility for feeding it more useful material is important too but as has been said by Gregory, we actually need to be spending far more of our conscious hours doing this than we do.

    Hi Marcus,

I agree that it is probably impossible to understand it. But it’s essential to learn how to use it. I don’t understand my car and computer either – but I know how to use them as useful tools. Probably we should stop trying to understand it and start focusing on giving it the right food, like fuel for a car and data for a computer. What do you think ?

  8. Hi, Oliver! I wonder if I will ever fully understand how the subconscious mind works (doubt it), but if I can use it to my advantage, I guess I won’t worry about it.

I like the idea that if we daydream or visualize or imagine what we want often enough and can experience it as if it is real, it will become so. I have experimented with this a bit, but based on Gregory’s comments, may not have done it long enough. I will try again.

Like he said, at least daydreaming is fun! :)

    Hey Oliver,

I find the subconscious mind fascinating. I must admit that after I read “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” by Joseph Murphy is when I started to really understand how it works. It’s a very small book but oh so good. As Gregory stated in his comment, it helped me understand how this all comes into play. I’ve been more conscious ever since about my thoughts. Man, that sure does help.

If I didn’t believe in the subconscious before I started saying affirmations and afformations I would believe now. It really is amazing how the subconscious controls so much of our life based on beliefs that we may not even be aware that we have. I’m glad that we have so many ways to get in touch with our subconscious and make it work for us instead of against us!

  12. Jayne Kopp says:

Oliver, the subconscious mind is such a small part of who we are, but such a huge part of who we are.

I am so thankful I know it exists to be honest, because I think if we know it exists and have a basic understanding how it works, we can control it and use it as we wish.

There is so much programming in there and as you say, ‘it’ doesn’t care about logic, it only cares about protecting us.

While protection is good, ‘it’ can go a little overboard if we allow it to do so.

Hence we stop at those stop signs when there is no longer a need to do so.

    terrific post as always!

    Hi Oliver,

Wow! I love the discussion that you Gregory and Jon had about your views on the subconscious mind. Gregory made a very good point, the subconscious mind does not care about happiness, we choose to be happy by making happy moments.

Our subconscious mind is primitive. It only knows survival and nothing else.

Parts of the subconscious mind are easy to train and can be very helpful. It is relatively easy to repeat a positive affirmation. It is also easy to have the naysayer in you deny that affirmation, so…one has to watch out for that.

Other parts of the subconscious mind are more difficult to control. Do you know it is possible to control your dreams?
