Previous lesson plan about this chapter (December 2011): Think And Grow Rich – The Six Ghosts Of Fear – Lessons From Chapter 15
Think And Grow Rich – Oliver Tausend Reads His Lessons – The Six Ghosts Of Fear
Napoleon Hill begins this chapter as follows:”Take Inventory of Yourself, As You Read This Closing Chapter, and Find Out How Many of the ‘Ghosts’ Are Standing in Your Way BEFORE you can put any portion of this philosophy into successful use, your mind must be prepared to receive it. The preparation is not difficult. It begins with study, analysis, and understanding of three enemies which you shall have to clear out.”
He goes on:”These are INDECISION, DOUBT, and FEAR! The Sixth Sense will never function while these three negatives, or any of them remain in your mind. The members of this unholy trio are closely related; where one is found, the other two are close at hand.”
So what does that mean for my lesson ?
After the last lesson about Think and grow rich and the six ghosts of fear, I decided to write an individual lesson plan about each one of these fears and to publish them on my blog.
I had to write two lessons about the ghost of fear of poverty which has always been the most predominant fear I experienced so far, sometimes in conjunction with the fear of loss of love.
It has nothing got to do with me, that’s why I was asking myself how I was able to develop such an insane fear of poverty.
It is said the ghost of fear of poverty walks invisibly from generation to generation, like bald heads in the male blood line…
My grandparents had plenty of reasons to be afraid of poverty.
Warning: In the following audio, I’m coming up with some drama. I’m not doing it to suck you into it, and I’m not doing it for the sake of the drama.
I’m doing it for the sake of self-therapy and for the sake of speaking up – I’m sure that there are people who are able to relate and recognize themselves in other people’s stories, even though everybody has a unique story.
I feel the emotions that are related to these stories and I feel that my throat tightens.
I don’t mind if you don’t want to listen to it…it’s not so bad anyway because I am sure that there are ten thousands of people in this war generation of my grandparents who were worse off.
Something to be grateful for.

Oliver, this really was a thought provoking thought. It is a fact that we do tend to live based on past experiences. My grandparents were similar. Thank God they did not suffer as much as your one grandfather though.
We do need to erase non-serving habits and life with the prospect of a bright future. How unproductive it would be to not approach tomorrow with a positive attitude. Not to mention, we would be doing ourselves a huge dis service.
Thanks Oliver. I love listening to your audios and reading your insights.

Hi Jayne,
thanks for adding value to the discussion. Past experiences of other people, that’s the point. I don’t know why I absorbed all these negative emotions. It really felt like a curse sometimes.

Hi Oliver,
Quite apiece of history there. Lot of emotions. I find past circumstances can really be so powerful that they have long term effects as those you mentioned. Long term on us too even if experienced by others. I guess the power of observation comes to play here. Overcoming is the real challenge. It takes time and for some it never happens. But, we do not have to do it alone. Life can definitely seem unfair if we let it stay as such.
One of the toughest things to experience is the courage to go forward past the ghosts, because we have lived with them for so long. But it is well worth it.
Bless,
Joe

Hi Joe,
thanks for your comment. As unfair as life sometimes seems to be, it never really is. I just found out that my mother’s uncle who remained in the Soviet sector was as red (politically) as one could be. He seemed to be so extremely proud of the achievements of socialism that he didn’t think life is unfair. Probably he thought that we should envy them, lol. So when he didn’t think that life is unfair, why should I ?
You are right regarding the power of observation. Observation and my personal interpretations and misinterpretations as a child.
Take care

Hi Oliver,
What a powerful story! My grandparents have also shared with me stories of why they should fear poverty growing up in the great depression. Though their stories aren’t as dramatic as the stories that you share they are still more than I can ever say that I have lived through.
But they took their past experiences as motivation to do the best that they could. My grandpa was a real entrepreneur, starting various different businesses. One of which is thriving to this day even after my grandfather passed on last year, two of his sons have taken turns running it.
Thank you for sharing!

Hi Stacy,
that’s how you turn lemons into lemonade. Amazing, thanks for sharing the story of your grandparents.
Mine also built modest wealth, as we would call it in Germany, however they were part of the working class and fairly proud of it which is fine.
Take care

Oliver, aloha. You have an amazing ability to open yourself up and honestly express by your feelings, your emotions–especially in such a public forum. No doubt by the time you finish this process, you will feel like a new person.
Given experiences, it is hardly surprising that a lack mentality is prevalent in your family’s generations. As you put your ghosts to bed, Oliver, with the knowledge that you know have, hopefully, you will be able to do the same for your children so they are not “haunted” by the ghosts of the past. Or, with your guidance, they will be able to put them to bed at a much earlier age.
A question for you, Oliver, do you feel there has been an added benefit to you in your therapy because of this very public sharing as opposed to sharing only with family & perhaps some friends? Or, do you feel the end result in this catharsis would have been the same either way?
Oliver, you are a very courageous individual. I applaud you. Take good care, my friend. Aloha. Janet

Hi Janet,
very good question.
The truth is that I never shared this story in its entirety and the underlying emotions with anybody (other than in this audio, in written form on this blog in January and in my mastermind group) – especially when reading the part with the starved baby, my eyes get wet instantly.
I shared it once one year ago with a therapist who does family constellations (don’t know if this is the right expression) but she came from lack too and eventually chickened out.
I immediately lose trust when I deal with people coming from lack and who try to talk me out of the deal. I know that it might be only a feeling of mine, but it’s like it is, at least at the moment.
I have a great doctor only 10 km away from me who does a special form of Kinesiology, very powerful and completely painless. However, if I share with him my issues, I know right away that he is being run by his own programming.
It has been a challenge so far to find sincere help from people who are strong enough not be run by their past lack programming. My mentor Michael Dlouhy and our mastermind group is one of these rare species. I am grateful that he is one of my mentors.
Getting sincere feedback from like-minded people like you is the one of the best forms of therapy. From time to time, I need a special treatment like the Mastermind Intensive Seminar.
Most people don’t understand the problem: I could have millions if I had undone this poverty programming years ago. I am not saying that in anger or regret (not anymore). It’s not that I don’t know how to make money, but poverty consciousness in conjunction with fear and the most debilitating negative emotions of all – ANGER – made it impossible for me to keep it and grow it.
Formerly, my wife and I pooled our non-supportive attitudes and behaviours towards money. We changed that in the process and we are pooling our supportive attitudes and behaviours. I am so grateful that she is able to keep our books now and prepares them for our tax advisor. We have become a mastermind group also in the field of money.
Thanks again for asking this questions à point.
Take care

Hi Oliver,
It is great to hear when someone is just opening up and telling everything, personal and impersonal. I love to see bloggers getting naked!
Past experiences should never be forgotten. They are indeed assets for our progress. We can digest them, learn from them, reflect them and improvise on them.
Great post!
Cheers,
Jane.

I can understand completely how these ‘ghosts’ have had a hold on you.
It is only when we shine a light on them though that we can put them to rest.
I admire and applaud the way in which you are taking responsibility for creating the change required for your own personal liberation Oliver. Bravo!

Great post, Oliver! It truly is important to exorcise these ghosts. I was reading The Warren Buffett Way and the author explained that people tend to have twice as intense a reaction to bad things than good, and that is why people will hold on to bad. However, this just leads to playing the game of money not to lose instead of playing it to win. This is a fear that is holding a lot of people back because they don’t realize the costs of this fear.

Hi Steve,
I play the money game to win. It’s how we play our games that reveals how we are going to play in real life. How you do anything is how you do everything, as T. Harv Eker says.
I like it that you point out that chickening out in face of fear has its cost. There’s a price to pay.
Thanks for your comment.

Hi Oliver,
As human beings the “fear factor” looks like it can never be totally ruled out. Someths what really driver ur to achieve things we could only dream of is fear.
Thanks for dissecting Napoleon’s book as I’ve not been able to read it all despite starting in 2007.

HI Emmanuel,
thanks for your comment. I also think that we won’t ever get rid of fear. Chances are it isn’t desirable at all. If people never are afraid of anything, they are not challenging themselves enough.
So it boils down to the fact that everybody faces fear, both rich and poor people. Successful people and unsuccessful people. The difference is that unsuccessful people chicken out and successful people follow through and go beyond their fears. Life is found beyond our fears.

Through reading this I can understand how your 6 ghosts have a hold on you! But the important things to realise is that by pin pointing your demons you were well on the way to getting them under control which can only be a good thing!!!
Well done on the blog (and the podcast – if thats the correct term?) Its been a very good read.

these demons live best in a dark room. So switching on the light is an important to regain control.

He was always working and trying to make thing s better for everybody in the family, and to a large extent he did hower he paid the ultimate price. and …….worked him self to death. If my Dad would have had the Knowledge that we have things could have been different.
He died from ignorance.
He could have read the book but he was proberly to busy to take the time, How Ironic is that? Ok my friend good to talk I will be back Graham

Hi Graham,
sorry to hear about your Dad.
As sad as it is, I admire your honesty: Ignorance is a deadly poison, the only cure is specialized knowledge.
In addition to ignorance, busy-ness kills as well because it eats up our time.

Hi Oliver,
I remember this post from earlier and it is still just as powerful now as it was then. I know that we all have our ghosts that we deal with carried on from our ancestors, and I think it’s amazing that you’re in a position to be aware of them.
I’m sure you’ve studied the process of change in your personal development journey…you’re more well read than I am.
Incompetent and Unconscious, which basically means you don’t know you don’t know.
Incompetent and Conscious, which means you know what you don’t know.
Competent and Conscious, you know but you have to really need to be conscious your actions
And Competent and Unconscious, where you know but you don’t have to concentrate on the change.
I think that as long as you’re moving toward Competent/Unconscious any stage you are currently in is progress.
Eventually we all want to get to the point where those ghosts of fear of poverty and loss of love are not something we experience, because we are confident that they can’t “get us” so we don’t think about them any more.
Beautiful post…once again!

Hi Heather,
thanks for your beautiful comment, great job.
The ultimate goal is being competent and unconscious, that’s true. Kind of a zen-like state, or, as Janet would say, Aloha-like state.
Chances are we never are able to get rid of fear. Chances are it isn’t even desirable. Someone who never feels fear, doesn’t challenge himself enough.
It’s how we deal with fear that matters.

Hi,Oliver,
I guess we all have our fears, the difference is just how we deal with them-do we win over them or do we let the fear defeat us. Fear can be therefore a good motivation for us to improve ousrelves and strive to better and higher goals…for a prosperous life, as you’d say!
